Just a hint what 1000whp m278/157 engine looks like with top mounted turbos that i have designed. Twin GTX3071R turbos, two water/air 3inch in/out intercoolers in the front bumper. tial external wastegates, tial blow off valves, new turbo water/oil lines and not the last complete heat protection including trubo blanket, carbon wraps and special heat protection mat. Intercooler ice tank in the trunk with additional pump, transmission clutch pack and more.. Target 1200hp and 9 sec 1/4 mile
you should check out GAD motor sports. they design a 900 hp car.
Yes i know all of the tuners and their products. All of them use the log style manifold and the limited space for the turbos. Also i'am using the stock tial 0.82 ar turbine housings and stock compressor housing (can replace the turbos with even larger if needed ) , external wastegates!! And the cost of this setup is 1/2 of their prices ..

Should be enough for us with the 4.7V8 to upgrade the IC pump to the AMG pump or go with the better and super expensive Renntech or kleemann ones?
The flow difference is huge but also the price!
I'm thinking to upgrade to the AMG pump but I was checking and all modern mercede have water/air IC and even my E350d have an AMG pump that costs 150€ from the dealer! don't know if its better flowing than on my 4.7L V8 !!!
After i received all the parts needed and including my custom build turbo manifolds , intercoolers (two intercoolers in the front bumper), trunk ice tank, heat protection, etc the build is on. I'am dropping the engine next week Just picture how the turbos (twin gtx3071r) will be mounted..
Quick question for those who have done the M157 turbo upgrade on the M278: what have you noticed in terms of driveability at lower rpm vs. the stock M278 turbos?
I'm currently running stock turbos with an OE tune only and am very pleased with the almost immediate power. I notice very little lag at all which is great as this car is my daily driver.
There is not any noticeable difference. It all depend who will tune the car as in my case the lower end torque was much more compared to the m278 turbos so the car is more responsive The M278 stock turbochargers are very big restriction, the motor will outbreath the turbines and wastegates after 3.5k rpm

How have the M157 turbos changed the experience?

Mine is having huge different after swapping the turbo...
0-60 mph in only 3.4-3.5 sec...
I dont think any stock E550 turbo with a tune can do that.
As for dyno, on mustang dyno, I got 542whp. 628 wtq.
Mind you, E63s dynoed on same machine only got 480whp, 494wtq
My question was really about how the torque comes on at lower RPM ie. city driving.
Can you recall how the car builds boost under 3000 RPM now vs. before the turbo swap?
In my decade-old experience, a larger turbo typically takes longer to spool up but my experience was from 5-cylinder engines (Audi, Volvo.)
There is a day and night difference. the turbos on the m157 and not too much bigger. Its not like your going from a 14g to 20g turbo. The difference before and after the turbo swap is ridiculous. Off the line its a monster and I don't see many cars keeping up with the 550. It shreds through first gear and your glued to the seat. When I'm Cruising in 2nd gear around 3k rpm and I punch it the turbos kicks in immediately. When I compare it to the stock turbos its no comparison. The spool up is quicker now and the power is ridiculous. A tuned 550 with out the turbo upgrade is fun at first. but after you get used to the power, you notice the turbos beginning to die out 3/4 through the rpm band.

I actually didn't. I almost got my *** handed to me on that project. Within 5 minutes of turning the engine over, we heard a slight knock coming from the block. We spent 2 days looking over the install to rule out any possible faults on our end and everything checked out perfect. I went through hell and back with the vendor whom did not want to refund me my money. In the end I got my money back and decided to purchase another m278 engine with lower mileage and I basically copied Gardevski's layout(Thank you Garvd.)
I installed;
M157 Turbos ($740 on eBay lol w/ only 8k miles)
Meth Kit- $850
Renn DP's Used-$900
Larger H/E- $240
I/C Pump-$400
LSD rear diff.-$1500
AMG Brake Assembly F&R-$2,500
Tune- $1,500
Labor-$1,700
Misc Parts: $700
Total-------Roughly 10k for everything which is HALF the cost of the m157 engine.
Tomorrow the Car is going to the body shop to have the AMG bumpers, skirts and fenders installed..Kit cost $1,700 ordered from China and was worth every penny.
My old motor never sold so I decided to keep it and make a project out of it. Next year I will stroke it and install better pistons. Im sure by next year we will have more options when it comes to internals. Thanks to guys like Gardevski that are willing to push the limits at their own expense to pave the road for owners who want to take it to the next level. The M278 platform is now a worthy competitor because of guys like you! Thank you for that and good luck on the build! I'm sure everyone is patiently awaiting the results of your current project because I know I sure ammm!!!!:

Holyyyy !!! A pair M157 turbo only 740 on eBay ???
That is dirt cheappppp
I got mine triple the price of yours.
Is yours with 4MATIC and with Airmatic ?
I have been trying to find AMG brake system, but i couldnt be sure which one to get.
Bslicks187 going to send you a PM about some questions since you live in NYC. Need some info on some shops for maintenance (cheaper than dealership) and aftermarket support tuning etc.
Nice on the prices was that all luck or we can find the heat exchanger/ic pump for that price and what was it?
It looks like the upgraded turbo m278 membership is growing! This is great. These cars really have been overlooked in the tuning community given the high amount of power they are capable of producing. Once the turbos are upgraded, they aren't far behind their m157 brothers in terms of power output. I recently acquired a set of Weistec W.3 turbochargers from a wrecked e63 in Florida that was too good of a deal to pass by. To prepare for the turbos, i'm currently getting an extra torque converter I found online upgraded by Level 10 in prep for a fall installation. With the Weistec turbos installed, the power output should be absolutely staggering as the m157 turbos make the car a monster in themselves. If it were not for this thread i definitely would have never dared a turbo upgrade on my car. I've learned a LOT. Much appreciation to everyone.
Great! I was about to install two gtx3071r turbos on my m278 engine but i'am too busy with my business and dont have much time for such a project.. So i go with two upgraded M157 turbos (stage 2 upgrade with 76mm compressor exducer) as well as top mounted intercoolers with 2.5 inch charge piping, BOV valves, weistec trunk tank with pump, aquamist meth injection, Front and rear LSD and upgraded transmission. Expecting 900-920hp from my new build..

Also, who tuned your car ?
For the AMG brakes you install the rear AMG on the E550 as direct fit (both brake disk and calipers) For the front you will need adaptors (the knuckle is different, shorter arm) . I designed and build my front 4matic adaptors and currently running sls black series brake rotors (390x36mm) with the cls63 amg front calipers. The brakes are better compared to my cls63 amg with ceramic brakes...
