I think there is a reset procedure you have to do to reset the pano. I could be wrong though since I don't have the pano roof on my E55 just the regular sun roof. Similar thing happened to my car where the sunroof would only open 1/4" inch every time I pressed the button. You should do a search, I believe there is a procedure someone wrote up.

My pano and shade have been acting whacky. It goes 4 inches, then stops. If I push the button again, I get 4 more inches (This happens opening and closing). Sometimes it just doesn't move, so I leave it closed until I can part with my car for a day. My warranty covers it, I just need to do it..
If there is a reset, I would love to know what it is. My motor seems fine, and no grinding. Maybe just a sensor glitch

the "reset" is holding the button either open or close for 15-30 seconds and it should fix - mine unfortunately seems to be more complext than that -

If the reset doesn't work, look in your owners manual, it will provide instructions how to manually close it using the crank, that came with the car.

I just reset mine the other day using the instructions in the manual. Let me know if you want me to type it up and scan the images.

chawkins - no can do - the right side is up the left side is down - won't move - reset didn't do the trick - it just makes a grinding noise - shop is calling me today with time/estimate to fix

I had the same problem with my pano roof in October 2010. I rarely use ito begin with and the one time I open it when out to dinner with friends it started acting up similar to what you describe.
Took it to the dealer as I wasn't able to close it at home with the hex key, and after 5 weeks in the shop I was thanked with a $11K repair bill by MB of El Paso. Yup.... I could have bought a new Kia for that price.
But i digress.... be prepared to spend some money my friend

I still have a warranty, but was dreading the dealer. Now, it is smooth as silk

If it is grinding, STOP trying to use it. What you are hearing is the motor gear spinning against the drive cables. Depending on severity, basically how bad or long it has been stripped to attempted to be used depends on the repair. At best, it needs a new drive motor. That is if the cables are not damaged. If it needs cables, guess what, buy the cables and you get the rest of the drive system for free! And thats where the big bucks kick in.

iknownothing - thnx for the heads up - i will keep you all posted as to the fix -
i spoke to the shop today - the book says 5 hours to remove and install - so it looks like this may not be as spendy as i might have thought - funny thing the motor for the pano roof is from a 203
more to come - was referred to a great shop to do the work
