Question 06 ML350 "hood open" message

It suddenly happened to day when I started the car. The small screen displays "hood open" red message and beeps all the way when the car is moving. The hood is definitely closed, as I checked many times. I cannot switch the display to any other information, nor can I silent the alarm. Scheduled the service with a dealer but the earliest day they can put me in is next Monday. Does anyone know how to fix it? or at least turn the alarm sound and message off for now?

The switch is located in the driver's side hood catch at the front cowl. You will see a little blade switch under the catch that is depressed when the hood closes. Check to see that the two wires leading to it have not come loose. If so, plug the connector back in. If not, unplug and jump the two wires at the connector for the time being. Then, replace the switch and reconnect.

Thank you. I located the switch. The two wires are so tightly stuck in the switch that I couldn't even unplug it today. Gonna try harder tomorrow.

All electrical connectors have a release - press up on the tab on the bottom of the connector and pull and it will pop right out.

Thanks for the detail! But after I pulled it out and back in several times, alarm was still on. Then I jumped the two wires, alarm was still on! Maybe it was't the switch?

Got have to see the dealer now...

Same problem on my ml320... wires are good at the switch. What was the fix? Is there a Ground I should be looking for?

Scott, the ground for the switch is the same for the left side headlamp. So if you left headlamp is working odds are it is not a ground issue.

Here is a test that is not that difficult:

1. open the hood and test the BROWN wire for GROUND, using a DVOM in all tests.

2. then test the BLUE wire for any voltage. Make note of the voltage.

3. with a screwdriver push the latch down on the lock switch, this will simulate that the hood is locked. Then perform 1 & 2 again, noting the voltage.

4. then leaving the hood open, lock the vehicle with the key fob. Look to see that the mirrors blink and then perform 1 & 2 again, noting the voltage.

5. upon completion, make sure you open the driver's door and pull the hood release handle BEFORE YOU CLOSE THE HOOD.
