Transmission bit the dust - a lot of nasty noises and bearing remnants in the pan. I'm looking into a used one. I'm wondering if I can expand my search parameters in 1998-2003 models and look at S430 and CLK430? Are those other choices compatible?

Symptoms: From stop car initially accelerated normal then began to hesitated, jerked, and audible clunk from location south of the engine compartment. As car heavily shifted from 1st to 2d symptoms continued. When car shifted to 3d and above shifting and performance was normal. As I had to slow the car shifted hard from 3d to 2d and 2d to 1st also hard. This all occurred while returning from lunch back to work. I had to stop twice on route back to work and same experience each time. On drive home same experience. Drained fluid and removed pan. Good amount of metal shavings and a couple bearing pins in pan. No CEL. Car is NOT in limp home. No ODBII codes.

Car has about 140K on it. Changed the fluid and filter at 110K. Only a slight trace of metal dust present at the 110K fluid change.
