WTB: CLK55 AMG Engine

Hello All - long time lurker, first time poster.

I have a 2002 CLK55 AMG that has lost compression. I wish to avoid exploratory surgery as I don't have enough time and I'd like to keep the labor costs as low as possible.

In any event, I am looking to purchase a 2001-02 engine in good condition with under 100K miles. If anyone knows of a good/reliable motor for sale, please let me know.

Conversely, I am toying with the idea of selling it as a parts car. It's a shame because I really love the car and it has only only 82,500 miles! It's up on craigs list and located in South Florida (Delray). All good on the car, sans engine. She wears very cool OZ Opera rims.

Scout Ebay, you never know just might come across a M113K engine.

Another option might be to find a CLK 430 or 500 engine for temporary assignment.

Lost compression on all cylinders? Fuel wash-down of the rings or broken timing components. Hmmm!!!

Nice looking car though

Yes - seeking an engine and ebay - prefer to go that route if it makes reasonable financial sense rather than sell her as a donor car.

Sorry to hear that. Have you checked out how bad it is? At 82K and how clean it looks, it sure seems like it would be worth the rebuild if it didn't bend internal parts. I have about 135K on mine and it runs like new. BTW, I'm just down the road in Boca.

did you get the motor. you'll find it a lot cheaper if you look in the yards rather than ebay. guessing you can get it for $1000 shipped, maybe even slightly less.

one of the guys one the c43 forum got really lucky and picked up a new 0 mile 5.4 for $1999 shipped

I have been scouting ebay (not many offerings), but have been looking at yards via car-part.com. There are some engines available - problem is it seems like a crap shoot. When contacting the salvage yards, all they can say is "it ran". No compression #s offered, and even if they have them, the numbers can't be proven.

Even with the warranties offered (90 days-1 year), I still have to keep in mind it will cost me $ 2k in labor to get her installed. If the motor a yard supplies is bad, I'm in it for another $ 2,000 of labor. Need to find a supplier for the engine I can semi-trust.

I need to decide if I want to take the risk. Problem is I LOVE the car, and love even more that they are failry rare. I think these 2001-2002 "55"s will increase in value akin to the first generation M3. Another small motivation to keep her.

You are right - They seems to be in the $ 1,000 - $ 1,500 area with mileage between 50K to 90K miles. But how can one be sure they mileage they quote is accurate?

I guess I have some trust issues.

this one is actually pretty simple.

ask for the vin number of the car the engine came off. once you have that, then do a search on https://www.vehiclehistory.com/vehicle/land.php

this will tell you at what mileage the car was sold at auction and also give you a pretty good idea of the car/engine history.

try to seek out a lower mileage engine 75k or less. the cost of installing and removing an engine is definitely something to be worried about but a 90 day warranty is great. installing it yourself or maybe with a friend would be best, these engines are really not hard to install but it does take the right tools and a couple of days.

before the engine is installed, have a good look at it, pull the plugs check for foulage, oil etc. lift up the valvle covers and see if everything looks good.

when i did the 5.4 swap into my car i also replaced a lot of parts, ended up buying them online which meant that it took almost 2 weeks for some of the parts to arrive, id say start buying parts now so you have everything when the engine arrives.

also dont forget that there are different models that you can use an engine from. all the m113 engines are the same, some require an oil pan & pump swap off your old engine.
you can also upgrade to the m113EVO engine from the 203/209 - (this engine has the double springs in the heads and something else maybe I cant remember), but you can also get the engine our of AMG e, ml, s classes maybe more i dont remember

oh yeah, you should also be able to get the engine number after you have the vin from obe of those site that give you the option packages based on the vin.

the engine number is stamped on the rear of the engine housing. you probably wont see it if the engine is dirty, you might have to rub with your finger because the engine stamp is a bit light, almost like a dot matrix etching. its in the back of the engine like right where the transmission would slip in on top (round housing).

so now you can match the engine to vin number and be sure of the miles

Mickey - thank you so very much! That link will be super helpful and will put me more in my comfort zone if I do indeed decide to install a new/used motor.

I would like to swap in the same type of engine, but frankly it's out of my comfort zone and expertise to do this on my own. It's definitely too advanced for me.

I will make a final decision this week which way I will go.

I spotted one of these today at a car show parked next to a new AMG-GT.

It is a true 6.3 twin turbo and the owner was happy to show me the engine for a shot.

There are engine importers in my Country. Look up Mikes Place. They in Cape Town and have stock of the M113 engines. I dont know what the mileage is or if its from CLK, C Class, SLK, ML or CLS. They are asking R60 000 and currently the Rand to Dollar trades at roughly R12.80 to $1. I found two salvage yards here. One has a M156 engine, missing few stuff and important stuff are broken and are asking for R80 000 for the motor. The other place just got a 2011 ML63 with a low 80 000 odd km engine asking for roughly R100 000. Dont know if they selling it with the 722.9 tranny or not but I would settle for that if I were you. The later two options are M156 and not our M113 motor but hey whats the harm in some power I guess as these M113 engines aren't just lurking around these days.

Thank you, Khan. I'm located in the US -it seems these motors are available here, as there are quite a few listed on car-part.com. It basically comes down to mileage/condition of the engine, and most of all....trust. Thank you for your kind words!

Thank you, Kahn. Fritos was my nickname growing up. 40+ years later, my friends still address me as Fritos. And yes, I used to love them.

So I sourced an engine with low miles, so I have decided to keep her. I paid a visit to the shop, and when I saw her in the corner, she still made my heart flutter.

Does anyone know if I need to reset the ECU when the new engine is installed?

As far as I know something still has to be done with your SAM modules and cluster SW to accept the new engine unless you just swapping the engine and not the ECM for it then I doubt anything.

Gents - I want to thank each and everyone of you for your assistance! I was able to source the correct motor with 11,000 miles less than the original. The car, thankfully, is running great. I could not stand to see such a rare car dumped in a scrapyard.

Hopefully these will increase in value one day akin to the E30 M3. In the interim, I will enjoy her power and poise.
