C36 correct engine question
Hey guys!! Well, I'm kinda trying to find out things about this cars before start actually looking for one in person...
Searching the internet in Spain (where I'm gonna live in from mid April) I've found a couple of c36 examples that looks fairly good and worth using as a learning basis...
One of them is a 1994 C36 that doesn't have the "amg" badge in the valve cover... the car looks nice but for example, how can I be sure that this is his 3,6 Amg engine and not any 3,2 Mercedes with the 2,6 black tube there?
Can you tell de difference by looking at it or do I have to go there and look at the numbers? In that case, where are they located??
thanks!!
BTW... it looks too good for a cheap car, isn't it?

The AMG logo on the spark plug cover is just a plastic label that doesn't mean anything in and of itself. You would have to check the part number on the block of the engine as all M104 engines look the same.
Here is shot of the two places showing the 3.6 info:

i also thought all 3,2 and 3,6 L were names 104 engines, but if there is a stamp that says AMG then I should directly go for it!!
is this stamped near the Carter? Which side of the engjne?? Thanks!!

The engine doesn't look like a C36 engine.
See for yourself the difference.

i noticed right away what you've ment by the differences... mostly what I see is another king of valve cover isn't it??
could it be because this one I'm showing is a first gen and your example is a 1996 one??
ive found this other pic of an official AMG source (I believe)

It seems not that easy to get tutorials and that stuff on C36 cars... C43 are somehow more famous, aren´t they?

Ehmmm.. are there any important, expensive or hard to find things regarding the steering, suspension, differential etc??
And what is up with the biodegradable wiring harness?? I´ve red about that in several sites but noone says if a replacement is available or not!

steering parts are stock w202
suspension is SPORT package, no problems finding them.
I went with Koni adjustable shox and Vogtland suspensione lowering my car, that's amore when my car kiss the tarmac sitting closer to ground!
biodegradable ECO friendly sleeve on copper harness is crap!
it cracked giving short circuits, replacement harness shudd be better

So there should be no issue getting parts of needed?! (Nothing like Alfa Romeo!)
Not sure if I've seen your car, but I've red about that Koni/ Vogtland setup
About the harnesses... are replacements available or that is a DIY job (that I'm in if I need to!)?

C43 is not that easy to get in Spain... maybe that was a more consumed car in USA than in the EU? Don't know...
But for example, the W210 E55 is easier to get and it is not bad at all I believe... I'm kind of stucked thinking about the C36 though!

wear n tear w202 parts are available from stealership or aftermarket companies for many years ahead.
c36 cosmetic parts like spoilers might be difficult to find or very expensive???
AMG tax is steep!!
wide AMG front fenders are NLA from stealership, if you get into a fender bender you will get stock w202 front fenders
replacement harness is available from stealership.
a c43 would be easier to work with on service cause it's a newer car than the c36 which had special tweaked parts from AMG, maybe some special c36 parts are NLA coz it's an older construction or more complicated to work with where the v8 was taken from the shelf only had some parts specially tweaked.

I thought the C43 may be harder to keep in good condition as it is a V8... more parts I thought...
i didn't know the fenders on the C series AMG were wider than the regular W202!! Nice!! Jej!!

w202 AMG fenders are more like the W124 - 500E/E500.
have you seen this car front fenders, they are very beefed up on steroids if compared to stock E-class!
V8 - M113 engine is lightweight aluminium where the I6 from C36 is cast iron which is a lot heavier!
V8 is cheaper on gas than I6 from C36.
maintanance for V8 is 16x spark plugs and 8 coil packs for ignition, 2x air filters
c36 will probably be more problematic to keep in healthy condition when it gets older.
if engine block is screwed you have to repair it for very high price.
in the futura i think it will be cheaper in the long run to buy a c43 if you want to keep low cost on repairs

i don't have encountered any significant diference in price between the C36 and C43... I just happen to find more 36s available, where it supposed to be the opposite right?!
i also didn't think the 43 was cheaper on gas!!

i also have to look at the cars in person!! Same with the W210 E55... that one you can get it pretty easy in Spain... it is kinda big that body but...
Still I prefer the W202... more stylish in my opinion

MBWorld Fanatic!
If not mentioned its worth mentioning that year 97 c36 was the best model due to having a bit more hp and the wiring harness issue was resolved in that year.
So you should be choosing between a 97 c36 and a c43

the more HP I didn't know actually... that is not my main concern as I tend to enjoy powerful cars but as I drive them in a regular bases, a little more HP is something I may not even notice...
C36 is from 94 to 97 or 95?!

As I actually need the car (I've mentioned in another thread that I'm buying the car as the car I need to drive when I'm stablished in Spain) I kinda need to choose the best option I can get... maybe this first AMG for me are not going to be the ideal one because of that, but I'm trying to choose the best available
