Short-term review of 2017 GLC300

I picked up my car at the end of May. I have about 3300km now.

Pros:
1. Love the way it drives. Feels very safe and confident. I completed a long road trip to the states and it kept my family very safe.
2. Love the looks
3. Love the comfort that it provides both to myself and passengers.
4. Love the safety features - they all work very well.
5. I am not missing those "options" that similarly priced NX might have had.

Cons:
1. Too many problems within a span of three weeks.
- Wipers - first got tightened, then replaced both wipers.
- Brakes - thought they might have replaced the brakes for late 2017 models, but I guess they didn't. Started screeching when reversing.
- Rear window lock button- rear window lock would not turn on. I am a bit mad at myself for not checking that button when I picked up the car (but who really checks that damn button?). Now it's on a "back order" so I have to somehow make time to drop off the car and pick it up at a later date

I asked technicians for answers, which were unfortunately very lame.
"Wipers may just shake because they are long"
"Brakes may just screech because they are high performance brakes, but yours were worse than usual!"
"Rear window lock button is just a faulty one!"

2. Fuel economy not fantastic, contrary to what others are experiencing. I think it has to do with heavy traffic in my city (very very congested).
I would really have to be careful with throttle if i were to keep the fuel economy.

3. Too many conditions for eco engine on/off lol. It takes too long and too hot (to match the temperature) to work lol.

While I like the car in general, I am now very concerned about its overall long-term reliability, if three things can go wrong within a matter of three weeks. It's technically not "lemon" because the issues do not affect how it drives/performs, but I perhaps should have leased this rather than buying it.

Hope future buyers might take my experience into consideration.

Sorry to hear you're having those issues. Good to hear about the strong pros you mention, but the con's suck! Sometimes after getting the "wrinkles" out it's smooth sailing after that. I hope that's true in your case.

Do you happen to know if your car was assembled in the Bremen, Germany plant or the Valmet plant in Uusikaupunki, Finland? It shows the final assembly plant on the window sticker. Just wondering.

Sorry to hear about the issues with your GLC300. I have bought GLC300 during the last week of May and just hit 1000 miles. So far I like everything with this SUV. It has P03, air-body-control suspension and most of other options. So far no issues. It runs very smooth and everything is working well. There are few things I just need some time get adjusted too. I will watch out for any issues and report back (hopefully nothing to report in few weeks/months).

Good luck and hope everything turns out well for you.

Mine was assembled in the Valmet plant. Personally I dont think it's a problem with the assembly- it's more of parts problem.
Hopefully it will be smooth sailing too!

Vaboy's query about location of assembly is interesting. My GLC 300 was assembled in Finland and I was wondering if there are problems specific to that plant. I posted a recent query here about the yellow light in my Blind Spot Assist not working. Although I ordered the P2 package, they forgot to put in the voice activated control system and just put in the 7 inch screen (I did get a reduction in price for the missing parts of the P2 package.) And now the handwriting recognition on the touchpad controller is not working properly. So I am wondering, like Vaboy, whether quality control is lacking in Finland.

Can you post your build sheet from Netstar and your window sticker. It sounds like they built a p1 car with a touchpad. Does your car have Command?

Is the yellow light supposed to be on all the time? Mine has not been on and I thought that was the usual.

The sticker on the car indicates: RBC PO2 Premium Package without COMAND, and then lists what else it does contain for the PO2 (115V power outlet, Blind Spot Assist, 5 year weather and traffic, ambient lighting, storage package, etc). Many of the included items only come with the P2 package.

To Confusedd, the yellow light is only supposed to come on when driving up to 20 mph to let you know not to rely on the Blind Spot Assist. Blind Spot Assist is only active above 20 mph. Above that speed, the yellow light is supposed to go off.

Was this an ordered car. I think the dealer messed up! Premium 2 cars should have command. To have voice you must have command. Larger screen only is in cars with command. Something does not make sense. Go to MBUSA website and build your car and see what I am talking about.

I know some of the other MB models have yellow lights, but I am not sure if GLC does too..
Yellow lights on BSA don't seem to be mentioned in the owner's manual... I really really hope this is not another problem.

Mine does not have yellow light. My car has active driver assist. No mention of yellow light in owners manual.

You're right, confused. If it's faulty parts it doesn't matter where it was assembled. I can't believe they're still shipping cars with the screeching brakes. That has been know for a long time. Guess they haven't used up all the crappy brake parts yet!

I agree with all of you. It is not the plant. It is the parts. I mentioned on other posts that I had a GL . The build was great. Unfortunately it had issues with oil leaks and problems with air suspension. Both parts issues. The diesel engine was built in Germany. Had it for eight years. Dealer took care of me.

dieseldoc, yes this was an ordered car for a lease. My dealer claimed they received an email from MB explaining that the mistake was done at the Finland plant. I received everything else in the PO2 package except for the COMAND voice control and the 8.4 inch screen. I do not think that the dealer would have been able to order just a part of the PO2 package.

Concerning Blind Spot Assist, the yellow light in the triangle below 20 mph is not mentioned in the Operator’s Manual, as others point out. But I also received an email from MB after I received my car in early June, explaining how the various features work. For Blind Spot Assist, the email indicates:

“Blind Spot Assist will alert you if another driver if is in your blind spot. The system is only active above 20 mph. A yellow triangle is displayed in the side mirror when the system is in standby mode. A red triangle is displayed in the mirror if a vehicle is in your blind spot. An audible warning is announced if the blinker is switched on and red triangle is present.”

That is also the way it worked on my leased 2014 GLK 350.

I have seen the yellow on a GLE loaner car I have had. I have not seen it on the last c class I drove as a loaner. Will ask my wife about the GLC since she drives it predominantly. I do not remember seeing yellow triangle.

No yellow light ever with our GLC. Red comes on as it should. Me thinks MB has sent out some mis-information.

They dropped the yellow warning

Read this tread while sitting waiting for my car but it was ready before I could respond.

So I leave the dealership and sure enough my 17 GLC with P3 doesn't light up yellow above or below 20 mph. Never noticed it before. I clearly remember my 2014E (traded) did have the yellow light.

I brought up the owner manuals for the 17 & 14 from the MB USA web site. The 14E clearly says its there and you can test by turning the key to position #2 the yellow & red will show up. I tested my 2017GLC in position #2 and only the red shows in the test.

I left the dealer and there was a 2017 GLA SUV loaner in front of me at the traffic light with cars on either side of it. I could clearly see the yellow light in the mirror(s) although the car was not moving.

Back to the MB web site and I looked at the 2016 GLA (2107 available) and sure enough it talks about yellow blind spot mirror lights.

They talk about overtaking a vehicle and the closing distance speed being less than 7 mph. This will turn on the lights. I have not tested this yet but I am thinking the yellow warning has been dropped from the current "blind spot assistant" for the GLC because, I am not seeing the yellow light with the ignition key test.

Thanks to everyone for checking on whether the yellow warning light was operative. Not sure why MB left it off for the GLC.
