2017 G550 hooting noise
Good day,
I have a new 2017 G550 since mid July (3 or 4 months of owning it now) straight from Germany. I am extremely disappointed in this truck as there have been problems with right from the start. I have already had to replace a fuel sensor after two months of owning it. Now I am facing an even larger problem. I have an extremely annoying hooting noise that is constant which sounds like an owl under my hood!!! I have read a review from another G550 owner who states the same problem with his new truck. I am so disheartened by this. No one can figure out this problem and I refuse to have my transmission torn apart, etc. I feel when there is a problem right from the beginning on a brand new truck like this that Mercedes should be replacing it, no questions asked. I will be bringing in my truck to Mercedes but honestly from what I have read there is no fix for this, or at least not that we know of. Who do I contact at Mercedes in Germany? I want to save myself anymore aggravation and speak to someone who makes these trucks and tell them what is happening. It seems that Mercedes will be hearing more and more about this problem with their 2017 G550's. I want resolution! I'd appreciate it anyone out there has the same problem or can advise? Thanks!

Sounds like the truck is still in warranty. If you are not going to allow the dealer to take things apart in an attempt to repair it how do you expect your issue(s) to be resolved. I suggest you have two chances at getting a new replacement...slim and none. Let the dealer go through the diagnostic process under your warranty. If you can't get satisfaction from the dealer ask to speak to the regional service representative. This will move you up the food chain. Good luck!

I have been in contact with another individual that had experienced the same hooting noise. After exhaustive repairs and service visits, Mercedes took his car back, refunded his deposit, down payment and his lease payments. I understand the transmission was replaced to no avail. Sadly there was not a remedy for the problem. He even said that another brand new vehicle on the lot G550 also made the same noise. Long story short, I don't think there is a resolution for this noise and unfortunately can't enjoy the truck, only until Mercedes comes up with a "fix" do I think I'll be able to put this problem to bed. Thanks for providing comments and replies.

Don’t worry, I’m sure the hooting sound will be fixed.
if I understood correctly, you are mostly disappointed because the G is brand new.
You have to remember the G is made in a very old fashioned factory (just watched a video of it on YouTube. It’s prewar in many respects), and it’s not made by Mercedes but by Magna. Magna does not have a great track record of assembling reliable cars. So you must expect more issues with the G than with an S Class, for example.

My 4x4 squared made the hooting noise for the first 700ish miles but I haven't heard it for quite a while. I'll admit it was annoying but knowing the car was under warranty gave me the confidence not to worry about anything and the noise worked itself out.

Hey, Thanks for the reply. Currently MB is investigating and in the very preliminary stage. I am awaiting Germany's reply as I had my truck and they recorded the sounds and were able to generate the noise at will in the shop. As far as quality goes, I found that the building quality of assembly has been nothing but exemplary thus far. I still a fan of hand built cars. The problem exists with the engine made by Mercedes Benz. They feel there is a pressure build and release issue. There are others out there that have the same problem with their 2017 G550's. I'm hoping they will not draw this out too long otherwise I will be forced to go to arbitration. We don't have the lemon law in our province.

Get used to it, A lot of them have it and its not a safety issue, they have no fix for it, my G550 4x4 have the same noise from day one and still going.
It sounds like an owl under the hood.
I'm installing the Renntech Blow-off Valve Adapter and hoping it will go away after.
But Please don't reach to an attorney, keep it with MBUSA and you will have better results.
Good Luck.

Hey, Thanks for your post. Mercedes is working on it now, but I think you're right they don't have a fix on it and just going through the motions. Good to know someone else is experiencing same problem as I am. Of course not the end of the world, but in my opinion spending a lot of money on a high valued car as you did I expect more from Mercedes brand. Unfortunately this noise has gotten underneath my skin and I don't know how to extract it without giving up and giving in. Please let me know what you make out on your squared. It would be interesting to see if that will fix the problem. Thanks!

Will let you once I install the adapters if it's a turbo discharge issue it should go away or get lower.

update with hooting noise - my truck has been in at MB dealership for a few days now. They were given orders to change the hose and gaskets where they connect to the turbos to see if this gets rid of the hooting owl noise. I will be surprised if this fixes the problem as I highly doubt it, but will give them the benefit of the doubt for now. I don't think there is a fix for this. Anyone else doing anything about their hooting noise? Will keep posted.

Hi there, So I picked up my 2017 G550 today and guess what.......they fixed the hooting noise!!! They had it for a few days, changed the hose and gasket on the turbos as MB had instructed but it still made the noise. Fortunately, the MB dealer where I take my truck has a cracker jack technician who can think outside the box. When this didn't fix the the problem which he didn't think would. He took it upon himself to listen to where the hooting was coming from exactly and distinguished it was coming from the front of the engine which led him to the diverter valves. He unplugged the electrical connection to the diverter valves and found the hooting noise was extremely loud when pressing on the gas and bingo that is the problem!! He theorized that there was too much back pressure on the diverter valve that didn't allow them to close quickly and therefore cause the hooting noise when they weren't able to close as they were designed to do so. So what he did was contacted the headquarters, told them of his findings and he went ahead and replaced both diverter valves. THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN SOLVED! They kept the vehicle, tested it a number of times and it didn't hoot anymore. I drive it all the way home today and not one hoot again!!! Anyone with this problem, please take it to your MB dealer and have them replace the diverter valves period! This is huge and MB should be thanking my technician for thinking outside the box and being persistent on finding a resolution.
