remote start

Summer is here and I decided to start the car to cool down before I enter it. All works fine assuming I left AC 'ON' but when I open the door car shut down. ...Doesn't make sense to me - is it normal?

Yep....normal. Car shuts down as you open the door. On my old CTSV the engine would remain on. I am not sure what reasoning the engineers had on this.

I can't tell you if it's normal but mine does the same thing. Drives me crazy.

Thanks. All agreed doesn't make sense cuz if you opening the car you have the key on you. It just costs us extra off/on cycle for the engine.

Agreed, it's irritating as all hell.

I thought about this for a long time when I first noticed the behavior. The only reasoning that I arrived at that made any sense was "liability", i.e. regardless of the outcome resulting from whomever opened the door and drove the car, it was the vehicle's key that started it... not some more abstract remote signal from MB me that's likely far more difficult to defend should the need arise

The lack of a heated steering wheel in the my18 cars makes this semi useful if the car's been sitting outside in peak winter. Outside of that I don't find it to be super useful and shutting off the engine on door unlock seems needlessly silly. One would think that mb engineers have some sort of way to tell the car to keep the engine running if the keyfob is detected at the door. Its no more hackable than keyless entry at that point.

I wonder if it’s a tech limitation or a case of the legal department being too conservative.

The thinking goes this way...MB engineers consider the remote task completed if a person with a key enters the car. Now that person has control. Turning off the car seems strange but its logical that way.

Dumbest thing to not have a heated steering wheel but the E63s is an excellent winter car and quite useful. We have some of the coldest winters in the US so unfortunately we can put them to a test. Dynamica steering wheel helps though

The system in the Yukons, Escalades, etc works well, no re-start required. When started remotely, the engine, pre-set heating or cooling options (climate control and seats), and parking lights are activated and will run for 10 minutes or until someone with the key enters the vehicle and presses the start button. The transmission shifter is locked and all other vehicle functions are disabled until the start button is pressed (or key is inserted and turned). Also, I believe it will only work if the vehicle is locked.
