Speedo cluster LCD

Wondering if anyone has found a replacement LCD for the speedo cluster that doesn't fade with time when it gets hot outside? I've replaced mine three times now - once under warranty, once with a replacement from a German site posted on this forum and once with a replacement from a group buy a few years ago. All three replacements have gone south. The last one from the group buy didn't last a year before it started to fade around the edges and it's gotten to the point where it's unreadable if it's over 80 degrees. Sure would be neat to find one that will last. Baffles me that they can't identify/fix the problem...

DUH! YOU LIVE IN THE DESERT!
Just joking, but yeah, I think that probably has something to do with it.
I'm still using the one from the group buy (Samitrey?)
and it's still good, so I'm guessing it just they get worn out faster where you are.
Every since I got that one from Samitrey, it's been good though it's pixelated
and never looked as nice as the original on a good day, but great when the original would've been
unreadable it's still working fine.

The best ones available are the made in Germany or stock MB ones however living in Florida I can tell you it doesn't matter when it comes to heat they all fade when it's sunny out. The only solution I have found is putting a sun shade over the dash when the car sits out in the sun.

Bringing this to the top... Really tired of replacing these LCD displays. It's getting warm again and I can tell I have to replace again. I have two new units on the shelf, but am willing to buy a new one if I know it will last longer than the two I have. I struggle with these LCDs failing simply because I live in a warmer climate. Surely updated units exist which can take the heat … ?

I changed the whole unit with a used one of later design it fits directly and looks nice and shine. It is a permanent fix U will love it and it worth that.

Alaqil, can you tell us what year and model the unit came from, and maybe post a picture?

I have C200 2004 m271 1.8 cc and I have no Idea about the year of the installed one. However, I saw it on 2006 model. It cost me about 33$ for the used unit and 25$ for programming. The buyer told me it might need fuel pump modification but it the fuel gage worked fine. In fact, every function worked perfect after plug and play I dont know why the programming is needed for but the mechanic adviced to do that. Below pictures I have for old and new one.

That's what is known as a 'facelift' dash console. So if I understand correctly, you did not have it programmed at all, just plugged it in and it worked? The 'facelift' vehicles went to fiber optic interface and pre-facelift are CAN bus, so I didn't think switching whole consoles was possible. This is definitely worth looking into! New orange LCD units are $50~$60 - if a whole used updated console is less and is plug & play it kind of seems like a no brainer. Thank you very much for the info!

I did the programing following the mechanic advise even the cluster worked fine after installation. He did somthing with old and new units out of the car at his workshop and I was not there. He claimed that the odo meter will not work unless programming is done. Are u sure it is fiber? The adapter seems the same for both and I can swap them whenever I want. I still have the other cluster on the shelf.

The odometer is stored in the cluster itself. From what I have read on here, even if you switch a like for like cluster it will not work properly due to it not being coded (programmed) to your specific car. However, a dealer may be able to do that for you as well. There is a post on this forum or Benzworld.com that talks about upgrading the cluster to a 2006-07 unit and last I checked, he had everything working but the fuel gage. Of course this was a few years ago.

That make sense, Then, I did not face any degradiation with new "facelift" screen because the programming was carried out.
Think about it, no more hot or sunlight worries any more . I would suggest to check with talent local shops around and If it is doable, it is up to you.

Any time dear. I bought it from a used parts store and we have a lot of them here in Jordan. The original price was 40 JD (57$) but the seller give me a good discount as I bought other parts too (Lambda sensor, combination switch, new spark plugs, transmission fluid with servicing kit, transmission shifter knob and spare key)
