Winter Tires - square or staggered

Winter Tires - square or staggered
I have 2 sets of wheels with my 2014 C350 4MATIC. An 18" staggered set I run with my summer Yoko Advans and a 17" staggered set with crap tires but the wheels are nice OEM and I want to use them for winter tires. Should I stay with staggered tires for winter which very much limits my choices (Yokohama or Toyo - just 1 type each), or can I use the front size 225/45R17 all way round including on my wider Rear 17x8.5 wheels? My front rims are 17x7.5.
I've heard that narrow tires get better winter traction, but I don't want to mess up the AWD and other electronic sensing functions.
Alternatively is there enough clearance to run 235/45R17 on all 4 corners....or is that even a worse idea because they are a bit taller than the standard 25 inch diameter? Thanks for your input. Love my car! Not about money, more about choice and good gripping "snows".

Thanks Guys.
I really want to use my 17" OEM wheels if possible, well since I have em anyway, and they look good.
The 225/45R17 91H Vredestein Wintrac XtremeS that I'm considering say they will fit wheels from 7 inch to 9 inch widths.
My fronts are 7.5" and my rears are 8.5"......so the tires should work okay....but wondering if anyone else has done this without any issues following.

You might be able to, I don't see why not.
There are people who run 215's on like 9.5's to stretch since they live the "stanced" life
So the rears might be a bit more stretched but the tire shop should be able to do it. I'd do a Google search.

It's doable. My dealer told me.
