I'm running CLS55 wheels. More aggressive stance due to the lower offsets and wider wheels. I have 245 fronts and 275 rears. The rears rub over bigger dips unless I drive raised, but my car is also lowered. I think some guys even run 255 and 285 but they must be not as low. You also have to watch the front as a few people have wrecked their fenders when turning, but they must've been driving slammed and going over some pretty big potholes
i'm just keen to go back to 18's and the guy with the CLS is sort of interested in my wheels. he'll probably need spacers though looking at the offsets etc...

Is the rear tire rubbing on the inner or outer side?
Have you lowered the car a lot, still on original air suspension?
Asking bcoz I'm gonna use C218 19" wheels with the following specs on my E55 and trying to decide whether to get 5m/10mm, 7mm/12mm or even 10mm/15mm spacers to avoid rubbing if somehow possible...

Im sure you can put 305's on but in the pic and when I saw it in person I can tell if it went any wider it would kinda buldge. Every tire is different some tires are wider then others even though they both can be 305's. It does give the car a nice stance though that's for sure. I myself will more then likely go with 295's when I swap out the rears.

hmm I’ll have to see, if 295’s are better I’ll go with them

The W218 CLS wheels may need spacers to clear the inner side as they have higher offsets than the stock E55 wheels. W219 CLS wheels just bolt on with no spacers needed
i've actually swapped my aftermarket rims for a set of 18" AMG IV style twin 6 spokes from a W207 Coupe since starting this thread. planning on finding some nice 19" rims to replace them with in time.

No the 5 spokes came on the 219 CLS55. MercMiki asked if I had the 25 and 28 offsets (from the CLS55 wheels) and I said I do, and that's what's on my car now. Then he said he was trying to fit 218 CLS wheels which had higher offset than stock E55 wheels which is why I said you may need spacers to clear the inside. Hopefully that made sense lol

I came to this conclusion after some calculations comparing the CLS wheels to the stock 18" wheel offsets.
W218 CLS wheels, with the following specs:
A2184011702 9.5 J x 19 ET48 + 285/30 tire
A2184011602 8.5 J x 19 ET34.5 + 255/35 tire
Inner Clearance: the inside of the wheel to the strut housing
Outer Position: position of the outside edge of the wheel

-15mm -3mm
...with a 10mm spacer...
-5mm +7mm
...and my rear tire is 20mm wider than stock, so adding 10mm per side...
-15mm +17mm

...so with 5mm spacers it will be...

So 5mm/10mm spacers are pretty much optimal when trying to keep the wheel position as close to stock as possible with these W218 wheels.
Based on these very scientific calculations lol I might have a generous 5mm extra in the rear/outside compared to KAMG who wrote hi has some rub there. I'm not gonna lower my car as much as he has, so it might be ok for me like this.
It's gonna be tight on the inside, though, so fingers crossed...

The front hubs of the W211 (at least my ‘06 E55) are tapered and NOT 66.56 mm diameter throughout its length. It is only 66.56 mm at the first part (innermost ~3 or 4 mm) of the hub then tapers to less than 60mm diameter for the remaining length of the hub.
I tried 5mm spacers myself and it covered enough of the hub’s first portion that by the time even my stock 66.56mm bore wheel went on, it only contacted the smaller portion of the hub, and was no longer a hub centric fit and there was play. It did introduce vibrations to the steering despite theoretically the lug nuts with their ball seats should center the wheel when torqued. Vibrations eliminated as soon as I removed the spacer and wheel resumed contact with the full diameter of the hub.
Hmm, interesting point.
I would o course prefer not having to use spacers at all, but in the rear I have to, otherwise they will def rub on the inside. Maybe I give it a try without spacers in front first, to see if it works. 5mm spacers aren't that thick anyway.
