'89 560SEL does not like mornings

Well I've researched everything I can find regarding cold starts but wanted to query the forum before beginning parts replacements to solve my problem. Problem doesn't appear to be temperature dependent since I'm in the southern US. Here's a quirk I've discovered: If prior to cranking I insert a knife point of small wire in the air intake so as to hold open intake disk (choke?) open even 1 mm she fires immediately and runs smoothly.

Does this indicate a particular bad part or adjustment to anyone? I'm a newbie to the forum but have been lurking at the edges and gleaned a lot from the communities knowledge base for a while so thought I'd ask.

Plutoe,
Huh, guess chasing this as a cold start issue was clouding my thinking.

Danke'.

Just a quick update:
Plutoe's response re-focused me on a faulty the throttle body. Fault because it's broke or dirty? Dirty is easier/cheaper to address so that's where I started. Search for cleaning throttle body led me to "Sea Foaming" and engine. One of these youtubes showed a 300SEL that had the same hard start as mine. Result is I spent $14 for Sea Foam and after following process shown on YouTube the vehicle is starting on first crank. Hope I'm not jinxing it but looks like a "fix".

Thanks again Plutoe!
