Tire Size Advice Needed. Can I fit 295/40/20 on 20x9.5 rears?
I am driving a 2017 GLC43 Coupe but nobody browses that forum so here I am. My tires are:
Front: 255/45/20 (20x8.5)
Rear: 285/40/20 (20x9.5)
Long story short I want to know if the rear wheel can SAFELY accomodate 295/40/20 Tires (Kumho HP91). The factory tire size has proven difficult to find here (and very very expensive). So I am hope 295 will fit. But according to google, 285 is already over the maximum width for a 9.5 wheel.

Can anybody give me some advice?

You can fit it but it will be of no benefit to you and the sidewall bulge will be horrendous. Increased width of tire on a wheel that is too narrow does not increase you contact patch. You will be increasing unsprung mass, decreasing performance in every aspect for literally no gain.
There has got to be a tire in the right size that is affordable.

secondly i did not ask about the fitment for the sake of speed/performance. I simply wanted a cheaper tire that was readily available. my question was strictly related to the fitment of a 295section tire on the fitment of a 9.5 offset rim in terms of SAFETY. will the tire be in danger of popping out of the rim because it might be too wide for a 9.5, Thank is all.
I am well aware that adding more unsprung mass or mass of any kind generally makes your car go slower. thank you for sharing your perspective on fitting 295s on 9.5 rims not being desirable.
my question for 265 on 8.5 rims was related to keeping the front rear ratio.

You will also increase body roll. A performance oriented vehicle is worth 10 - 20% additional cost difference between the two tires. If that answer doesn't tickle your fancy then swap the wheels out entirely and save money in the long run.

This question does not apply to your circumstance solely. This same fitment question, "will x oversized tire fit on x wheel width" is answered across the internet. Literally. Google search and a result will be found.
