08 ML350 Serpentine belt snapped off twice/unknown diagnostics

Now I have been reading some posts over the past week because in my opinion my mechanic is jerking me around. But to shorten an extremely long story...

After repairing these mechanical issues just a week ago the serpentine belt has now snapped off twice. After being fixed on 315/19 within a week after me driving it...


So again after I picked up the vehicle the serpentine belt snapped off TWICE while I was driving steering tighten up so bad I literally nearly crashed both times. Not to mention tow, time and money. Along with that I received these lovely messages...







Please please please I am begging for a second opinion, advice.. just HELP! Because I’ve been in this loophole with these people for a year now and I’m exhausted and broke!

Do you know how to remove the serpentine belt?

Individually list the parts that were replaced the first time this occurred.

Then do the same thing for the parts that were replaced the second time.

On both times, did he give you the parts that were replaced?

New main battery
Water pump
Belt tensioner
serpentine belt
2 pulleys( not sure which 2 pulleys were replaced) I did advise him to check all pulleys.

These parts have been replaced, no I have not received any of the parts as he said he got rid of them.

What could possibly cause serpentine to snap off twice in a short amount of time? That is what it seems like he can’t figure out....

How long did the first replacement last and how long did the second one last?

The RED battery indicator on the Instrument Cluster, is that on after the belt snapped or is it on all the time?

I will not be available from 6AM to 4PM today.

From intial repair of belt on Wednesday 3/20 broke on 3/23(That Saturday morning) after driving it for about 100 miles on friday 3/22. Belt was then replaced again this Monday 3/25 and came right off the pulley that night, found it on the floor of the care under hood Tuesday morning....I’m assuming it’s the pulley but should I check for other things ?

That's why you have to remove the serpentine belt and check every pulley.

Sounds like they don't want to since the guy wasn't able to fix it properly...

I would pop that belt off yourself and see what pully is hard to spin. It should be fairly obvious compared to your new ones. My other thought is that he put the wrong belt on it..

Hello everyone,

so yes it seems like it was the main pulley serpentine belt runs on that was not running properly. It was fixed and hopefully this does it, it’s been driven for 2 days after the fix and so far so good! Thank you all for your input....

Hello everyone. So since the last fix, truck has been fine. But just 3 days ago it happen again. This time belt shredded and melt into engine and other parts of car. Seems like there is a crack in the seal. As for belt coming off for the 4th time in 2 months, all pulley were taken apart, cleaned and replaced properly but now that I am having an oil leak, will have to go in and fix seal than replace pulleys. Wish me luck !!!

New belt that melted and shredded into engine.

Have you ever moved any hose clamps on anything in this area of the engine? I once took my upper rad hose off my w163 and when I reinstalled it the hose clamp was rotated a bit and the tail of the clamp stuck out a bit and just barely touched the belt. Took a week but it shredded my belt as well. Besides that, something has to be seized to go through that many belts.
