I’m starting to see the new 2019 g more and more, and find that the pre 2019 seems old and less sexy than before, what do you think?

I have the new one and the old one and they are both extremely sexy! In the long run I have no doubt the old one will appreciate considering it's legendary 40 year production run and limited production numbers during all those years.

Part of what makes the G Class unique and so desired is it's iconic and "dated" image. It hasn't been changed in 40 years, this is what attracts so many people around the world to this amazing vehicle. I saw an early 2000's model this morning and couldn't stop staring at it. If you want something more modern and less "old" a G is not it. Buy a Range or a GLS. Perhaps a history lesson on the G will help you understand what makes this icon so special. It's not about being "sexy", that's simply a byproduct of ownership. There is far more substance to the G than looks.

IMHO, the pre-19 G’s now just look oh, so narrow in width. The all new MY2019 just looks so much more properly proportioned, show boating a nice bit of extra brawn, stance, and power that now somehow seems missing in the old models. Just my opinion, and even pre-19 G’s still look great, but obviously the new 2019 really looks great. The biggest home runs on the 2019 over the previous 39 years is its massively improved ride, drivability, steering, suspension, stability, fully updated interior (now sporting 2 real cup holders for our Starbucks Vente Lattes!), raw power, and acceleration, especially when comparing G63’s. The big shot MB chief G designer engineer bloke in the factory video claims the 2019 also has improved off-road performance capabilities (important stuff like way steeper max tilt angles, deeper fording depth, and a ton of other off-road capabilities he delineated in the video), to boot. Can’t wait to see some real world A/B head-to-head, off-road testing of 2019 G vs/ old.

exactly, since the release of the new G I realize more how the pre2019 was so narrow, I sincerely believe that the value of the old G will fall.

In my opinion I feel like the current 2019 2020 etc. G's won't retain their value as well as the pre 19's did. I also feel like while they might take a small hit at the end of the day they look so similar and still have the same presence that there won't be much of a need for sellers to drastically drop their prices. I think the 17 and 18's are having the hardest time because they are selling close to the price of MSRP of a new G but once a couple years pass I feel like things will balance out. Only time will tell.

I agree, the 17/18 will be the first to feel the loss of value,

Can't imagine what would motivate people to buy a New 2018 in late 2018 or 2019 when the new 2019 model is out. Even if the 2019 is 10K more list price, you are going to lose 20K driving the 2018 off the lot, minimum.

Unpopular opinion maybe, but I prefer the exterior of the prior version. I miss the front fender vents and it was more masculine IMO, more squared off. Interior is unquestionably vastly improved.

10K more? Really? By the time you option out the 63 you're easily in the 160's. Discounts on 2018 put you in under 140 loaded. Personally I prefer the previous generation as it remains true to the roots of the G. I can always pick up a new gen after they get the gremlins out and have one of each. I had the pleasure of trying on a new 550 and it certainly drives better in many ways but lacks the substance of the previous gen. The doors certainly felt and are lighter, I believe aluminum now. Perhaps for me a bit too refined. Anyway, to each it own. Either way they are amazing vehicles. Can't lose.

I did! Ordered a 2018 in late 2017 after it was obvious that 2018 is the last MY for the old school 463. MB canceled the order because of switchover to the new model and the dealer offered to convert the order for the 2019 so I canceled the order and found one in stock in my 2nd color choice with the burl wood trim that I wanted.

I've always wanted a G Wagen since I grew up admiring 280GEs and 300GEs. The 2018 by and large still look and feel like a 300GE and I get 7 years of warranty - peace of mind since I plan on keeping this one a long time. The cold AC and modern 4.0l bi turbo are nice bonus

Being on G #10 or so and currently owning two 2018 G63s....I greatly prefer the 2018 and older G. Now, I really, really like that the new G has all new (and modern) steering...but the old recirc. ball steering is a quirk and you just get used to it. I kind of like that it is not numb and soft like on the new G (or most other new cars).

The narrowness of the 18 and older G is one of my MOST fav parts. I love that it fits in smaller spots and even though it is tall, it is so easy to zip in and around smaller parking lots and garages (height allowing).

I appreciate and respect all the new tech and modern amenities in the new G, and I think the rear of the new G looks amazing!!!!!, but the new G is, IMO, just like a square GLS or S-Class SUV or the Mercedes Range Rover. The "old" G was and is so unique and really a legend.

We never know what will happen to retained value down the road, but if the new G is like the S-Class or SL, GLS, GLE....the old G will win!!

Cold AC, Yes!!!! This is one of the biggest reasons I traded my (much loved) BMW X5 for my 18 G63. The AC in most BMWs is pathetic. The G-Class AC will cool a small apartment. Here in So.Cal we have 5-6 months of 90-100+ days (and nights many times). I needed monster AC, and the 2018 G is old school blow you away, freeze you out perfect!!!

Agree 100%. At some point I will +1 the new G to pair with my 2015 G63. Will leverage my E63 to do so. Will be nice to have old and new of this classic Benz in the driveway

The new model can never get to the level the old G-wagon got to. With this new model introduced, the G-wagon has now become like every other regular truck. Buyers will expect a new shape every 7years.
I am in love with the old G-wagon.
Don't care about all the bells and whistles of the new one. And most important turn off for me on the new one is how girly it looks with the curves and whatnot. The old G just looks mean and rugged. No unnecessary bells and whistle. I Love everything about the old G. Can't wait to own one in a few months. Will keep it for at least 3-4yrs before giving in to the new shape.

Exactly. One of the attractions to the G is that it's a dated vehicle that's basically an outlier among its peers but superior to all. There is nothing like it. The new generation is far more tech driven than the G was intended to ever be. Continuing to make the G in its current form would probably not prove cost effective over the long run.

After having a 2015,2017 g class I could not agree more. We are so happy with how the new ones have changed for the better

I think you copied this from the sales manual... how many people actually take their GWagon off road?

I just bought a 14 G63. I paid nearly half it’s original value. These trucks hold their value extremely well. I don’t think the new one is going to have much of an affect on the overall resale values of the G. To the regular guy the new looks very similar to the old. The new tech is probably cool and I’ve had cars with all that tech and cool lighting but it gets old. My G has AC seats, bluetooth audio, USB port. I’m set.

I have to say the new G somewhat blends in with all the other “suvs”. Also I like the old school steering of the old G.

I’ve also seen some full kits to convert the old G into the new G exterior wise. Interior wise there is ambient lighting kit and a new infotainment screen with CarPlay.

Same thing wjth lights and grills. I was going to do the lights but new g lights kind of remind me of Jeep lights for some reason.

We went with the idea of buying a 2019 but they was 6 months out at the time. The dealership had one 2018 G63 left on the lot and made us a decent deal on it. I figured I would drive it until the new G's started showing up but I feel in love with it.

As for it being narrower than the new G, that is fine with me, I enjoy driving it around town more than I do my Raptor.

The narrow body is actually something that I'm going to miss about the pre-19 Gs. I enjoyed the confidence of zipping through tight situations. Curious to see how driving in the new wider 2019+ will feel in tight city situations.
