08 E320 posible turbo power loss and restored

2008 E320. Coming from Miami to Boca Raton running 68 to 78 for about 45 min. and gave some pedal to pull into a faster lane and had almost no pull. So I pulled back in my lane at about 68 and waited till I could test it. Then when I put my foot to the floor, it bearly accelerated. Tried it a few times and it had very little acceleration or power. It could hold 65 ok. It was only 8 miles or so to my exit so I took it easy till I stopped at the off ramp light. I turned ignition off and back on and at about 25 gave it some pedal and it seemed strong. Tried a few more times and seemed good.
No CEL light, No Check Eng. and the temp seemed normal.

Any ideas what's up? Could it be the turbo actuator?

I would not worry about the issue until it happens again.

Check turbo flaps rods and servomechanism.

Had the same problem today after a 20 min. 75 MPH drive. Lost turbo boost it seemed.
I turned the ignition and on again and the power the was restored. Pending codes now: P0402 and P0404.
So EGR seems problematic.
I ordered the GDE EcoTune a few days ago and it should be here Tuesday. I will see if once the EGR is disabled closed, the problem goes away. Probab;y too late for keeping it clean but we'll see how ir goes.

Did the GDE flash this morning and the first thing I noticed is my transmission shifts now feel very smooth. Big difference. It used to bump at every speed and several times between 2nd and 3rd. Probably different levels of torque converter lockup. I don't detect any bumping now. I have a short commute daily so looking forward to a longer drive.

What engine you have? OM642 or OM651? Did you noticed higher engine temperatures? I would like to disable EGR as well but I'm worry about engine overheating since EGR is cooling the engine.

I have the OM642. if you search the site you will see several benefits to deleting it's operation and having it stay closed. But to answer your question, I have not noticed any engine temp change. But I just did it so I have not been on any medium or long drives yet.

Without EGR, you have more oxygen in combustion chamber which mean more complete burn which mean hotter combustion temperatures.
In addition to better emissions EGR actually lower oxygen amount during combustion which results lower combustion temperature. I would like to hear from experts if this can cause any issues for longevity of engine. That's only reason why I don't have EGR deleted, because I worry of higher temps.

Thanks for educating me there. I edited my reply.

EGR valves did have whole evolution.
Originally added to engines to lower pollution, in the past they lower the performance and I still remember 1980's Porsche we had that was having way less HP than its European twin.
But over the time they become integrated part of the system and per engineers review, are crucial part not only for emission, but for low-end torque as well.
So beside knowing that EGR delete is illegal, there is high possibility that you lower your engine performance. Bad part, there is no way the owner can measure the difference and all wee see is gunk that accumulate in the system.
But sometimes I don't understand some of presented issues. Although I drive in warm climates, that are easier on cars, most of the high-mileage cars I bought come from 4-season states and regardless having several MB with ca 200,000 miles on them, or even 300k on couple of diesels, I never, ever had a problem with MB EGR.
Remember old Cheby where I had to clean EGR at each smog test.

Kajtek thank you for your reply to this thread!
The only reason I consider to delete EGR was to protect oil and engine. I'm sure you heard stories about seized OM642 engines and oil related issues. I know because of DPF the oil quality of 229.51 and 229.52 is not as good as it used to be. And I know that with deleted EGR the oil will not be black from carbon after just 30 miles driving after oil change. I thought that by disabling EGR the engine will have better protection because oil will not be as dirty as with EGR enabled.
Also disabling EGR will help to keep intake manifold clean, we all know how the intake manifold will looks like on diesel engine after 100k miles
I'm not worry about EGR issues, but I just want to protect engine. What's your thoughts?

For several days after my GDE Eco tune I am still losing my turbo from a P0404 code. Oddly enough I did not have any problems till the day the flasher arrived in the mail. So it started just before the tune.

For the record - all the reported seized OM642 were newer engines with DEF.
Even for older model, with no DEF the only oils I was using ware 229.53 categories, but the car was dealer- maintained for 160k miles before I bought it.
Here is how intake looks after 180k miles. No codes. Did not touch EGR itself, but the L-pipe had lot of gunk. Still no codes.

I took my EGR valve out and cleaned it. After reinstalling it I realized I can see the operation of it opening and closing with the outer cover off. So I recorded it with a cold start a little RPMs and see it is still opening. So I figure I failed to retune it when downloading the GDE tune. By the way, manually opening and closing it I found a sticky area and even got it to stay open one time. So I cleaned that area and lubed it well and it and it did not stick open again. But redoing my tune download now.

The GDE tune took 7 try to complete. Same procedure each time although after the 4th try the battery drained too low to finish the test at the end of the procedure. But now the EGR valve appears to be held closed.
