Exclamation Buying Help: 16' E63s AMG vs 18' E63s AMG

Hi everyone! New member here and I need all of your help! I am thinking about buying a 2016 E63s (the one im looking at now: https://www.vitimb.com/certified/Mer...3b12c81b77.htm ) I think its a good deal, it is CPO and has only 19k miles on it, but i really am not in love with the color or rims.(and doesn't have the night package)

I have been going back and forth trying to figure out if I should buy this, or spend more money on the 2018 face-lifted E63 (which I really want and love so much) From a cost perspective, its the difference between lets say 65k (before discounts i have been promised) and idk 85k for 18's with low mileage. When we're talking about depreciation im having trouble figuring out which car will take more of a hit. I do drive a-lot (lets say 20k miles a year)

With all that said, what do I do? Do i spend the 60k something for the 2016, drive it for two years bringing the mileage to around 50k miles, and then sell it for 40k something? (taking a 25k hit on cost) OR do I cop an 2018, do the same mileage? What would the hit look like? Would it be the same? If so whats a better plan? What will I lose less money on! haha! thanks guys look forward to hearing ya'lls opinion!

The 2018 is not a facelift model. It's a new one so you are comparing cars that are at the end of a 7 year life cycle (W212) and the 2018 at the beginning (W213). Depreciation will hit both hard but the older one will loose value at a more rapid pace. Plus, while the 2016 is a facelift, it features older tech (electronics) and the 7 speed MCT transmission and especially the AWD all vastly inferior to the current model. I think the same of the engines but one can argue about that.

I personally wouldn't consider a W212 unless cheap but not when only $20k or so apart.

The '18 is not a facelift. It's a totally new car. Different engine. Different interior. Different transmission. DIfferent everything. Do some research on W212 vs W213. I would thing the current model (W213) will hold its value better.

Get the w213

the 2016 has forged rims -- those are premium rims and hard to find ... the 2016 ride is more supple than the 2018 and take that into consideration if this is a daily driver

you also wanna make sure the 2018 has no CEL issues or is a buyback

You are spot on with depreciation on the W212. You will lose at least 25k on it, more if it doesn't have some type of CPO/warranty on it.

Go with the W213, there is nothing worse than paying that much for a vehicle and not even getting the color/options you want!

Thanks for all your responses! What do you guys think would be a good deal for a W213? Would it make sense to lease it, or just buy? With that in mind, if I drive it for 2 years and put 30-40k miles on it, how much money would I lose? Also, if you guys have any other suggestions for cars in between the 60k-75k range would love to hear your thoughts

2018 S560 and 2019 E450 Wagon.
Test Drive a E450 in Sport Plus mode. Of course not as fast as the E63 AMG but still pretty impressive. You'd get a far better ride and would be a better daily driver especially with the bad new england roads.

Lastly - we are starting to see the first issues with the "hot V" configuration (goes for Audi and BMW as well). The beauty is the much better turbo response etc, the issue is the significantly increased heat retention and heat soak in components in the V. Dealers are seeing (esp) plastic component fatigue that took 10 years to see in the normal configuration show up in 2-3 years and less than 30k miles now. Again - warranty is your friend....

Agree. The W213 will continue in its initial steep depreciation curve. I would advise the op against spending the kind of money the W212 is commanding unless he is in love with the color and options. Don’t settle there are many options out there. A local dealer just sold a CPO ‘16 CLS63s with 16k miles for $67k. Look everywhere for the right price and color and kit. The M157 is a beautiful motor albeit the cabin is a bit dated. You are saving a big chunk of change though so if you find the right one I say go for it.

Some people liked their 212 better than their 213 including me. I ordered my 213 before the car was even out so didn’t test drive. It was just way too harsh and a in your face car for me. The 212 rode better and felt like it was geared more towards luxury vs shear performance.

?? I am not aware of any hot V issues on the engine, wether it is heatsoak (opposite actually as older MB engines are known for that) or any type of plastic fatigue.

And yes, cars at the end of a life cycle tend to have the bugs worked out but then this thing is ancient. The car was developed 14 years ago...

The W213 has been solid in terms of electronics issues with the notable exception on the AMG side with the Misfire CEL’s which I believe have been addressed is software update.

Also the 2016 has an updated command system compared to the 14 and 15 and may allow for Apple car play

They are quite a few. Ask your loal tech, esp if they are based in a hot climate. In particular smaller water connecters are starting to leak and also, when they need to do some other work, the hoses are rock hard, No flex left and they become very fragile / brittle.

We have some MB techs on the forum. Love to hear this confirmed... so far I haven’t heard/seen anything like this.
Our E63s runs a whole lot cooler than in the GTC...

I had my 212 for 4 yrs+, while I loved the car in the last few months I found the cabin & tech very outdated (particularly after my wife bought a Volvo XC90). I bought a used 18 213 a couple of weeks ago & love that new one much more than the old

Would it make more sense for me to get a C63s than the 2016 E63s? If so what year? What would a good deal be? Would leasing a 2019 make any sense?

There is a huge performance difference in the E63 and C63 that comes from the 4matic+.

The 2WD C63 can't put the power down off the line or in the corners.

The C63 must live most of its life with the TC light flashing given how often I see the light come on in the E63 with all four wheels being driven during spirited driving.

I traded my C63S for the E63S. No comparison in performance, comfort or versatility. Don't bother if you can get the E get it and don't look back there is nothing back there.

You are all over the place...
This normally goes in reverse. Want a new car. Pick the brands/model of interest, drive them all, pick the model/configs you like the best, start your search for the best deal. Simple as that.

I have to agree. Get back to the drawing board and see what you want, what your budget is, then get out there and start test driving and see what you like.

I am loving my W212 E63s 2015 and you can’t go wrong with either beast. I say test drive both and you will know which one you want going according to your budget.
