How bad is this?! 160.000 km e270, snapped camchain, broken housing?!

Hello, today I was driving my 2005 e270cdi with 160 000kms on it. On a hill, while changning to 4th or 5th gear i heard something weird, like a small "pshht". Down the hill I realised I had no power at all and the engine light came on. Next a lot of other lamps, like battery and more came on and pulled over to the side of the road. I tried restarting the engine, but with no succes and with a rasshling sound. I popped the hood to see what was going on and horribly found this... Has the timing chain snapped and produced that hole? How is this possible? Especially on a 160 000 km car, well caretaken, without any missnoices or major problems before?! Will leave the car to a mechanic tomorrow when they are open, but what can I from your expertise expect? Do you think its fixable, have you seen anything like it before (where the housing is cracked and with oil everywhere), and can I by any chance get away under 2000 €, or will I need to scrap the car/ replace engine....

//A very sad Erik

looks that way..

Bummer tow truck and engine rebuild may be in your future if a valve hit a piston and put a hole in it.

At least it is kind of an obvious problem. Anything can be fixed but at what cost?

It is not that obvious to me. Chain still looks in 1 piece, so possibility is that the tensioner failed and chain with slag cut the cover. Have seen it on other engines.
Qualified mechanic should turn the engine by hand and investigate.
Dual timing chains don't fail on MB at 100k miles.

Update:

I took the engine apart myself since none of the mechanics here said it would be worth the cost.
Mechanical fuelpump was stuck, the holder/ sprocket which it connects to was completely broken, metal pieces everywhere. The chain runs on this part which also was broken.... completely off and in parts.... there is no connection between camshaft and crankshaft... camshaft cant be turned while crankshaft turns but dont go around all the way.... atm looking for a new engine and someone who can replace it.
