This year’s AMG GT sales are up — way up!
Based on this report:
http://carsalesbase.com/us-car-sales...rcedes-amg-gt/
Last year 1,525 AMG GT’s were sold in the US. In just the first 6 months of this year, 1,858 have been sold!
That's quite a jump in sales. Is this due to orders for the refreshed 2020 model? Bodes well for the brand.

I assume these sales figures are orders from the manufacturer. But eventually they all get sold to customers.
What’s remarkable is the monthly sales for each of the months of March, April, May, and June 2019 have exceed all monthly sales since the car was introduced!
I’d say the 2020 refresh is modest, mostly the interior. Maybe it’s the economy.

It helps sales of the GT models by MB using them at the AMG Driving Academy as the main vehicle for the road track. I drove the GT models for the first time at the Advanced AMG Academy sessions at Road Atlanta in May. Enjoyed taking the GTR to about 145 mph on the track.

I was simply wondering why AMG GT sales are up so much, wherever they are occurring. Your sales figures confirm this. Overall MB sales year-to-date are down 7.2%. AMG GT sales year-to-date are up 103%.
Seems unusual for a car car has been around for 4+ years without much external change since introduction, essentially same horsepower figures, mild interior update. Why the sales spurt?

The GT was not readily available. You needed to find a dealer with an open allocation. When I ordered my I had to wait 4 months for an open allocation just to order my car. I put my order in March, received allocation in July- August, got the car in January. There were NO GTs in my dealer to look at, test drive.
I bought mine sight unseen . Never touched one before plunking down $189k for my GTS .
People didnt even know what it was it was when they saw it. Since I’ve been parading my loud, bright yellow car up and down, I’m sure a few others have seen and lusted after it and purchased one. Two of my colleagues bought one after I got mine.
Exposure, advertising , recognition and increased production led to increased sales.

My opinion - there is one reason for this. The Porsche 992 is not well received, and people who would buy it are looking for a different (German) place to go. So they are buying the AMG GT.

@thecutter64 So you’re saying production had been low (whether intentional or not) which restricted sales, but now productions levels have doubled after all these years? Hell of a way to run a company! LOL.

That’s a good thought and describes me. I plan on upgrading my ‘09 SL550 in a couple of years at retirement. The AMG GT Roadster is much more desirable than the 992 Cab in styling, sound, performance, and exclusivity.

Keep in mind these are hand built cars not mass production cars. People assemble these cars not machines like most models. That also has kept production numbers down.

THIS - I think you're right on. Dealers here in Toronto, Canada area are having a tough time moving the GTC and even GTR - second hand sales have been very slow for all GT cars, market is flooded with most sitting for months. Just local GTA I count 30+ 2019 cars amongst the dealerships here just sitting. Most have sat since last year waiting for a buyer. With the 2020's rolling in there will be massive write downs come late summer early fall.

Yeah I can tell you the new 2018s/2019s on dealers lots have been sitting there for a while. I checked the market for the last 10 weeks and have done VIN decoding on several models and I noticed there are quite a few cars that have over 1 year since delivery. Ended up getting my father a rather significant deal on a new 2018 GT C roadster. Imo, now is the best time to start negotiation on these cars

Start negotiating now and let them know you are serious and interested but for the right price. The best deals will be had on new 2019 cars next spring - those that are remaining will get written down big. The 2018s which were left over this past spring at dealers were cleared out at $55k off list. At those prices no reason to buy second hand.
Next year, something bigger and better will be out . Maybe a Tesla Roadster
