Adding a Subwoofer

Does the Harmon Kardon logic 7 system even come with a subwoofer? The music I listen to has a lot of highs when it comes to bass, my truck has a sub and I can actually hear the highs, in this CLS400 I can’t. Are subs easy to hookup?

Yeah it’s pretty easy. There are line level outputs and power is in the trunk. You may need to run cables if pushing a lot tho. Check out some of the other threads. Sorry I can’t help much. New here.

Just recently intsalled a shallow mount JL 10 inch sub in the trunk with an Alpine amp. I sent you a pm on the DIY. Very simple and easy.

Just wanted to revive this thread, but does anyone know if there is a sub for this sound system? I know the bang and Olufsen has a sub in the trunk next to the spare. Would love to experience the difference between both systems if the HK doesn't have a sub.

Yes there is a sub with HK system. I did install bigger one and extra amplifier.

Was it fairly plug and play? Which one did you with? Any thing I should note

Did you leave factory sub hooked up or disconnect and just use the bigger one? Thanks.

We did take factory sub away. There are some pictures on my build thread. Sorry I can't help you with wiring because a friend who is professional make the wiring connection etc. It really did make a big difference with extra amp.

If you just want a little extra bass, a line out converter wired off the rear sub is acceptable. However, if you want good sound, that won't cut it. The signal going to the factory rear sub is EQ'd, delayed and band-passed. You can't overcome that without getting raw signal from the MOST system, which involves using a mObridge integration unit.

IIRC, the factory sub on the HK7 is high-passed at ~38hz, so you'll never get faithful low frequency reproduction by going the line out converter route.

What your is saying is somewhat true. But. If you turn the subs forward it sounds pretty good. I’m audio snob and it sounds good. Much better than a loc.

the signal definitely extends below 38hz. i didn’t measure it but I did have to set a high pass on my amplifier for my sub specific application around 25-30hz.

With just the fronts playing it low psses around 60 and with rears around 80-90hz.

It extends below 38ish hz, but it's filtered below that. I recall it being a 12db filter, so you'll still get output below that.

If someone is interested in true sound quality, a flat signal with a DSP is the only route. In all reality though, a LOC on the sub is good enough for 99.9% of people, even people who consider themselves "audiophiles". Cabin gain helps compensate for much of the low end roll off.

Where are you guys getting your signal from? High level from the factory harmon kardon sub in the rear deck?

I have been wanting to add a sub, but I need my spare tire and I like being able to fold the seats down and carry cargo and stuff. Need to get a custom moulded box made or something I think (for a normal non-shallow mount subwoofer)

That's the easiest way. There is a secondary amp for that sub, you can take signal off of the wires that feed that amp. Get a small ~750w amp, use a Sundown SD4-12, and you'll have markedly better bass for less than $500.

My other advice? Spend $1300 on the mObridge MOST25 8.1.1, which gives you 6 175wrms channels, 2 300wrms channels, and 1 1000wrms @2ohm sub channel, in addition to an RCA sub out.

Super easy to install, and will make your entire system (even with the factory door speakers) sound remarkably better if you added even a mediocre subwoofer. For a sub, get 1 Stereo Integrity SQL12, it only needs ~1cf sealed.

If you wanna be a nut like myself, the mObridge allows you to run a fully active 3way up front, and then use the sub RCA out to power 2 of the SQL12's in an infinite baffle alignment on 3500wrms. This way, you don't have an enclosure to worry about- simply a baffle at the passthrough opening. You could spend less than $3k and have a TRUE audiophile level system, the type that most people have never heard. I'm still acquiring drivers and such, I'll post everything up once completed.
