Clk roof fault (w209)
I have fitted a new Varta battery as the old one looked ancient. The car has had the fault codes cleared from all systems as there loads of fault codes stored. The one thing I noticed is that the soft top switch does not illuminate with the lights on.
I called a friend of mine with his autel diagnostic machine and he had a look at it and told me the reason why the switch is not illuminating is because there is no comms with it.Apparently the switch on this being a facelift is called a lower control panel. He carried out further checks and says that the upper control panel is the cause of this.So I replaced the UCP with a used item and the roof switch now illuminates.Communication has now been established with the LCP. Looking on live data on his machine you can see switch activation in the LCP. Unfortunately nothing has changed in the roof /lowering windows department.I forgot to mention the electric windows do work on all the switches as normal.
Checking through live data in the roof ecu all the suggested values/actual values all appear to be correct.I tried a couple of random things.I disengaged the luggage divider and opened the boot, then operated the roof to see if a message would appear in the instrument cluster.Absolutely nothing.I then unlocked the roof at the front and the message soft top operation appears.
Is this still a possible roof switch fault? It is almost like it doesnt know the switch has been operated. My friend is quite a clever guy but this has got us stumped.
I did borrow a roof ecu to try but the fault is still exactly the same(no fault codes)
Many thanks and sorry to go on
I went through this procedure using Rudeney's recommendations. My report on this exploration : https://mbworld.org/forums/clk-class...em-solved.html And voilà

With the help of my friend,we have tested various limit switches using live data on the diagnostic tool.
Note-My fault is that nothing happens when the soft top switch is operated, not even the lowering of the windows,no clicks from the relays or any warnings on the dash.
So here are my data readings with the roof closed.
Luggage compartment separation closed component S84/9 operated-yes
Soft top locked component S84/11(left soft top locked limit switch) operated-yes
convertible top lock in catch position component S84/18(soft top limit switch in catch position)-yes
Convertible top open component S84/3(soft top open limit switch)operated -yes
Limit switch-soft top bow down-yes
Limit switch-soft top bow up-no
Limit switch-soft top bow in catch position-yes
Status of soft top sequence-convertible top compartment cover-in locked end position with roof closed.
Convertible top compartment cover closed S84/13s1 (soft top compartment cover closed limit switch) operated -yes
Convertible top compartment cover open S84/13s2 (soft top compartment cover open limit switch) operated-no
Convertible top compartment cover in catch position S84/22 (soft top compartment cover in catch position) operated-no
Convertible top open-component S84/3(soft top open limit switch) operated-no
I have data for other items, but I thought if somebody was able to cast an expert eye over these readings to start with, then if correct I can then move on.
Many thanks
Daryl

I know sounds crazy

I will try to test this theory tonight. The only thing is that I have pre-facelifted car, but I don't think in this case it would be a problem.

With this theory you could be onto something. It is though it does not know the switch is being operated.I have communication with all modules.I can see position of all limit switches.I can activate roof pump through roof module. When I unlock roof at windscreen "soft top operation" appears in instrument cluster.I believe the windscreen switches operate via can through the overhead control panel.
When I first bought the car the battery was very poor.So I replaced this.Originally I could not communicate with the lower control panel, which I did not realise at the time that is what the roof switch is known as.
This is when I found there was an earth missing from the roof switch. This wiring comes from the upper control panel above the stereo. So I replaced the upper control panel from an identical car that had a working roof and communication was then established with the lower control panel and the roof switch now illuminates, which it did not before.
My defective ucp was fitted to the other car and now has a fault code stored in the roof module of loss of communication with lcp.(which doesnt matter as the other car is beyond economical repair anyway)
Using my friend's Autel diagnostic tool, cleared fault codes from my car.Still no roof or lowering of windows.
Checking live data in lower control panel, you can see roof switch operation. So at this point I am thinking, what next.So along with suggestion, desperation and what have I got to lose,I obtained and fitted another switch from the other car, just to rule it out.
So am I dealing with a coding issue as you suggested, which at this point sounds highly likely.I fitted this ucp to the car.Does this have to be coded? I think I have heard other people fitting used units without problems.Everything else in the ucp works. In fact everything on the car works except the roof.
So I suppose the next step would be a session on a SDS as that is presumably the only tool that could tell whether the coding is incorrect, and if so,correct it.

) and will report back to you.Yes ideal you need an access to SDS to check coding, but I think you can try an instrument cluster from another clk convertible (preferably facelifted). Yes it won't show odometer but it should work anyway, again will have more details after some tests done

please help I just want to swap my roof over .
thank you
