2013 E550
Question Help a noob make his e550 sound better

Howdy- I have a 2013 E550 4Matic (W212, M278). I'm also not a gear head so don't make fun of me (too much at least). I'm just trying to bring a little more happiness to my experience with this car. It's my daily driver. I don't want my Benzie loud enough to trigger avalanches, but I do want to at least hear that this twin turbo v8 can be louder than a field mouse avoiding an owls capture. I'm also looking for something affordable and legal, so I don't want a muffler/cat/resonator delete. An affordable exhaust, maybe exhaust tips, or there's even a chance I'd be happy with the sound of just a cold air intake (or, someone also said there's an air intake muffler somewhere that can be replaced?). I also have an addiction that I know is controversial, but I love turbo flutter/blow off valves. Is that doable on my car? I don't care about performance unless we're talking a big loss. It's already the fastest car I've ever owned and I prefer sound over a few HP. Would love to here whatevah thoughts you got! Thanks!

Keep it stock as your not knowledgeable on fixing things when they start going wrong from modding it.

Exhaust you gotta remove stuff to make it sound better, all those things are helping keep it quiet.

Intake, only reason you would hear more is because its opened up with a KnN style filter that sucks at filtering out particles.

You can add a blow off valve but seriously why IMHO, Your happy with the power/speed, enjoy running around with it. Spend the extra cash on suspension components or tires.

2013 & 2014 E550 4matic
The unfortunate news is that you may just need to open the window, kill your music, and be happy with S/Manual mode - or you may quickly find the price pushing your comfort. One downside with the E550 compared to the C63/E63 is that performance/aftermarket parts are less common, but the few that I have seen when poking around suggest at least ~1500 USD in parts to get started. Or you can ball like Jordan with the 4k+ Weistec kit. The reality is just that with cost of kits and the time of mechanics, and you dooooon't want this to be your first mechanical venture, you may find it difficult to justify in the end. If it's possible, I would try discussing the idea with an independent shop that you have a relationship with - I promise it won't be the wildest thing they've heard.

Mercedes are built to be as quiet as possible, the cabin is heavily insulated and designed not to transmit noises. so is the engine compartment.

bought the wrong car
have a shop lop off the mufflers and put em back on later

E550 tuning is a thing, but the harder you run those turbos the shorter their life will be and it's already a well used car

Interesting that my SL400 with a bi-turbo V6 sounds awesome. On startup, it burbles like a couple of inboard/outboard motors on a speedboat. And once warmed up, it purrs nicely. Of course, having the top down makes a difference.

Since you are a noob to Mercedes, please understand that any mod to intakes or turbo functioning (i.e., blow-off valve) is going to "F" up the balanced running of your engine (unless you get a tune). BO valves sound cool on boy-racer WRXs, but that's not what you have. They really mess up the unmetered air in your engine and you run the risk of running rich or lean -- not good.

Ebay E63 mufflers are your ticket.

Edit: And I would leave alone the charge piping. I've already been down that road of research. Not worth it in my opinion. I can elaborate if you'd like, but this engine is gtg just the way it is. The AMG mufflers will increase/give you plenty of turbo whine and exhaust note relatively inexpensively and not cause problems in the long run. There is a guy on youtube that installed a BOV with videos still up. We aren't manually shifting and seeing compressor surge like the fast and furious boys. This motor just doesn't need it.

I didn't buy the wrong car. It was gifted to me when my uncle passed away and it meant a lot to him. If I wanted to buy a new car I would have said that in the post. If I wanted to chop the mufflers off I wouldn't have said the opposite in the post. If you're not going to be kind or helpful why reply

Haha thanks for the input. Yes, expand if you don't mind. And what's the youtuber's handle...kinda want to see his vids and hear it. I was (gratefully) gifted this car, but it's not my first choice which is why I'm trying to make mods that aren't typical for this quiet library lover. And the cold air intake was my thought that's cheaper and less negatively impactful versus exhaust kits or deletes. I completely understand and agree this isn't a fast and furious r34, but the resale on this is lower than expected and I don't have a lot of money...so I'm looking at this as my once in a lifetime chance to hear the satisfaction of engine growl and turbo flutter, even if I lose power or respect from other drivers.

Ur mistaken myself and many others love the sound of a free flowing V8 with nice cams and more fuel. These cars however are hard enough to maintain on a budget and even more so when you start tampering with them. Have had many vehicles and motorcycles that I modded, learned alot of lessons on the good and bad side of that. Now I am not a MB guru or anything but as sensitive as the electronics are on these things personally I would be hesitant to change anything without atleast having a good code reader/clearer and a backup plan.

Good luck and have fun with whatever action plan you go down.
