Hot and switched power for Dash Cam

Is there an easy and safe place to pickup hot and switched power for a Dash Cam?

I’ve bought the FitCamX style of dash and for all of my cars, two from AliExpress and two FitCamX. Dash cans are a rabbit hole, and I wanted simple and stealth installs. Mine do not record when the power isn’t on, I.e. when parked.

At the drivers side dash fuse panel there are 3-4 vacant slots at the upper right when looking at it. I forget which ones are switched but they are definitely there. I have my dash cam and radar tapped in at that location. Ran wiring along A pillar and headliner to dash cam mounted near the rear view mirror.

The Fitcamx didn't fit well on my 2015 S63. I do like the video quality and the customer service that responds quickly.

I bought the following dash am a while ago https://a.aliexpress.com/_Ew81sVF. I had to remove a plug in the mirror part and plug a y-cable in. You might be able to pick up sūch a cable or just get the nicely integrated dashcam with it.

On 2018 and newer S Class cars they got rid of the switched circuits on the drivers side fuse panel on the side of the dash. I ended up tapping into the cigarette lighter switched 12V in the slide out ashtray. You simply remove the whole ashtray assembly by removing the two screws holding it in on each side. You can then tap into that circuit. You just have to snake the wires to that spot. Easy to do.

I just went through this myself (not W222 though).... I went through every single switch on the car (both front passenger panel and trunk to find out which fuses are ACC only fuses, versus power-always. I two available spots in the trunk both of which are working and technically a (Reserve/optional/un-used) ones so they are safe to use without impacting/sharing wiring with another module. I'd suggest you find the Fuse Panel diagram (usually you will find it inserted above the fuse panel in the trunk "hard copy"), or search online, and then try to search for some reserve spots and also confirm how they work via a voltage meter (test for both, ACC on and ACC off). If you want your dashcam to work on park-mode, you will want to tap into both (ACC-only switch location as well as power-always fuse). Make sure to fuse it to 3A or 2A fuse to avoid camera malfunctioning and drawing too much power. I think 3A or 2A is good for 99% of cameras. I'd try hard to not tap into an existing/used fuse, and instead to search for a reserved un-used one with the right mode (ACC-only or power-only). Mostly likely the ACC-only will be in the trunk as this is where the fuses for the 12V power ports exist for most Mbenz cars I had, including the W222.
