OP do you have access to a hoist and transmission jack?
The right way to do this is pulling the box first.
The engine comes out the top once the stack of heat exchangers is removed.

Hi Thank you for that. No I don't have a hoist or a transmission jack.
But, Engine and box are now out.
didn't get a reply early enough however, I read somewhere a 45 degree angle was needed.
I did that and she came out pretty well as one unit. Now to find out what the box looks like when I pull the pan off.

hi John. Economics! I decided to wreck the car. The engine has 24 noisy hydraulic lifter which I will fix, the gearbox and steering box re good and will go into my 'good 'car. And I sold teh body shell etc to a chap who has a 400 SEL that had a nasty crash in the front left corner and it is his way to get his baby back on the road. So that was why. PS. My good car has no reverse...

It swims into focus.
Gary many many moons ago I would tear down the four speed box and replace the brake band to restore reverse. Don’t know if your 140 with its four speed box is same....
