W204 C250 rattle on and off
Hi,i'm Chris , newly join here. I have W204 C250 CGI Blue Efficiency 2 years ago. After hittin 83k KM the check engine light ( CEL ) started to show on and off( however the engine runs fine)and the engine rattle in cold start.Scan my vehicle with Icarsoft V3.0 and the P034062 shows. At this state the engine rattle when cold. I try to change the Camshaft Positioning Sensor and erase the fault codes. The CEL gone and also the fault code . However the rattle goes on and off at the moment. In the morning when I start the engine minimal rattle an just a little bit hesitating on crank the engine. The problem is sometime its swing about 2-4 Sec and rattle, its appears after runs few miles and then gone again. Do I need to check anything before start tearing the valve cover to see whats goin on with the chain and camshaft timing ? .At this moment I thingking to clean the throttle body and related sensors ,also change the coil at Bank 1 cylinder. Looking forward to hear some input. Thank you in advance

It’s going to get worse and the CEL is going to come back. If you cleared the code, the ECU will not reset the CEL until it sees this error three times in a row. Although 83 000 km is a bit early, your intake cam phaser is probably failing. You should take this opportunity to change both phasers and the timing chain. If you have medium to high mechanical skills and tools, you can save a lot of money doing this yourself. Search this forum for the long thread about this problem.

Phaser ? you mean the Camshaft Gear ? . Yes i do, i fix my own Motorbike and already collected tools and parts to change the Timing Chain. I just want to make sure that the problem with the timing chain and Camshaft gear before taking the valve cover off. Thanks for your input.

It is sometimes referred to as a camshaft phaser or camshaft adjuster. It has gear teeth over which the timing chain travels. As Odd Piggy pointed out, the problem will only become worse if the issue is not addressed. Crank times will increase, and so will the chain rattling on startup. Here is the list of parts I purchased. I replaced both the intake and exhaust adjusters.

Remove the coolant hoses on the thermostat first, and then any coolant above the level of the front cover (which has the thermostat attached) drains out. When you pull this cover off, only a few drops of coolant drain from the back of the thermostat and the cylinder head.
