Anyone ever try to negotiate with CarMax?

Remember when dealers would say they are below Kelly Blue book? Not anymore, they’re all much higher years after the Covid and chip shortage excuses.
CarFax, Experian and Edmunds all say $5K to $8K less than CarMax price. I want to remove my emotional side and be prepared to walk if they don’t move the needle a bit. Do I stand a chance? Or just wishful thinking? I could use a good anecdote about now.

Their business model was created to eliminate the negotiation portion of car sales.

Unfortunately they won’t budge on listed price but I believe they lower by $500 or more every month if you want to roll the dice.

What a great concept. Stand your ground while being higher than most any other dealer for the same car. The problem begins with an overwhelming amount of people having bad or no credit or no way to prove adequate income. Even` no SS# and there is a way to put everyone in a car or SUV when this person agrees to pay higher interest rates and or higher down payments. Many car dealers are making big bucks preying on sub par lending. If these people miss payments and the dealer takes the car back to sell it again.

Sub prime car sales is why many to most cars sold have a tracker in it.

Miss payments and a tow truck is sent.

You might have more to negotiate once you get a PPI as well. For example, new tires, brakes, replace batteries, fluid flush, missing 2nd key, etc.

This is an interesting question. When we sold another car a couple years ago the dealer asking prices on sites like Carfax were consistently much higher than KBB. We attributed it at the time to Covid market disruption, but there does seem to be a large valuation gap in there
