DIY servicing
Usually bring the Wagon to the dealer for once a year servicing but since I think they chipped the ceramic caliper (thank god wasn't the rotor), decided to start servicing it myself . Now I am not a very mechanical guy but with a lyft at home and with the help of YT, things are certainly lot more accessible now a days.
Did the Oil change, engine air filters, cam sensors and today the cabin filter.
Surprised dealers don't inspect the filters on the yearly services.
Glad I changed it, car smells normal now LOL

Wow how many miles on your wagon, and how many since last dealer service? Pretty sure they are supposed to be checking those filters and replacing them every few services…right?! Those are some rough looking air filters!

It currently has 51K and bought it 4 years ago with 38K and since it had a recent oil change, I didn't bring it in to my dealer until the following year with 43K miles
Took it back again last March with 48K miles but this year in March, I was tied up and couldn't bring it to the dealer so few weeks ago, decided to take the project on myself
I think they should have inspected the filters at 43K when i first brought the car in when it was new to them or at least the following year at 48K.

Not a mechanical guy ... but have a lift 😝
not sure how those two go together but that's a very impressive setup and you're humble. Nice to see you doing your own servicing - you get way more connected with knowing the car

Starting to get comfortable now but not enough to tackle the 964 Turbo yet?

does the engine have to come out of the P car to work on it? Is that a front or rear engine whip?

Rear wheel drive and no you don't have to drop the engine but there are several items that could make you drop the engine, which I have seen is really not hard to do either
I have 4 guinea pigs ( 3 camry's and an E55 ) to develop and horn my skills before moving on to more mechanical work on the E63s or this Turbo.

Well since we are here and you brought it up, let's list what is reasonable for the home DIY guy to do on this car:
- oil and filter change (traditional or mighty vac)
- battery replacements - main and aux
- solenoids (limited to ones that don't require removal of lines) and cps
- coils and plugs
- oil solenoid unplug
- brakes for those with more vigor
- filters
- front control arm (mevotech)
- headliner creaking repair
what am I missing

done
- battery replacements - main and aux
As a matter of fact, the other day at the office, the battery went completely dead and had to be jump started--- Over night charge been good and planning on getting it looked at Autozone to see how much charge it holds
- solenoids (limited to ones that don't require removal of lines) and cps
CPS i ahve done all 4 Solenoids i am bit reluctant LOL
- coils and plugs
Have started watching videos but can't quite get a handle on the indexing thingy yet... But it is one of the things would like to do. Planning on changing camry plugs to get hands wet and to get the feel of turning the plugs LOL
- oil solenoid unplug
What the heck is that, need to look it up?
- brakes for those with more vigor
Have already done 2 Camry brakes and the wife's 530i brakes, so I would be OK when ever the time comes. It has Ceramic brakes with pads changed around 35K so it has a long way to go
- filters
Just got done
- front control arm (mevotech)
Mechanic had already done this
- headliner creaking repair
Haven't heard it creaking yet

if you ask @Cifdig he will tell you indexing being perfect doesn't matter. He's a wise guy in the m157 tuning field and has the worlds fastest w212 amg. Yep, totally get it that Benz has bulletins on the need for indexing and kenneyd has a video on indexing ...
two solenoids are super easy - two will be challenging and need lines disconnected and moved
adding and maintaining and cleaning pigtails for 8 items (4 cps and 4 solenoids)
sonax alcantera restoration
wiper blades
cleaning sunroof drain (so important)
oil solenoid - how did you miss this pink elephant lol! Here's the link, now a sticky. Good luck getting through thousands of posts, curious what your final opinion will be: to unplug or not:

Does Mercedes themselves do the indexing and how do they verify the positions?
I did add the piggtails to the 4 CPU's but backed out of selonoids, are they all the same piggtails? All my sensors were dry through?
Oil solonoid, what did you just do man, opened up the box of Pondora..why? there goes my sleep tonight LOL

To me, the oil solenoid disconnect felt like a no-brainer once its function was explained clearly. It seems Tasos is still of a ‘wait and see’ perspective..which is fair, but I unplugged on both my m278 & m157.
The CPS’s and the magnets have different pigtails, which is annoying. Especially so b/c the more critical ones (CPS) are not sold in a kit by FCP bit the magnet ones are…

Yes, unplug the oil pump solenoid, the other member's linked thread includes a survey and the results of those who contributed.

Complete set of wiring harness pigtails. Good quality. These are what I have in my two cars.

Since we are on the topic, I found this video very interesting. I currently have NGKs in my SL400 since they are OE plugs and indexed much better than the Bosch plugs I first tried.

I am not sure if people have time to sand the washers to get the exact 45* indexing perfection, seriously?
Does Mercedes themselves do the indexing and how do they verify the positions?

I am open to being wrong - just show me reasonable proof they are indexing at the factory and at the dealership.
Pigtails for all 8 because it's super cheap insurance and they will leak eventually - so why not?
also if you don't do the oil solenoid unplug, at least add a pigtail to that because mine leaked - pics of mine inside that big thread

I do NOT think Benz mechanics at dealerships are sanding washers - it would be laughable to learn they did that / they need to crank customers in and out - they likely aren't indexing perfectly unless someone comes in with a misfire under warranty or if they're paying for a repair ... $0.02
