Advice R&R front differential (2011 4matic C300)
U joint on front driveshaft failed at 60 mph. Wrapped up heatshield and locked up.
It needs a new front driveshaft but the front differential is also showing damage since I can turn a wheel by hand without the driveshaft turning or the opposite wheel turning.
So, it looks like I need a new front differential too. WIS says to remove axle carrier assembly which is a big job (a really big job, most of the suspension is connected to it). I was wondering if I could get the differential out if i do the following:
1) Remove front driveshaft.
2) Remove right half axle, left half axle, and intermediate shaft
4) Remove rack and pinion steering assembly.
5) Unbolt differential and remove.
It looks like I might be able to get the differential out if the rack and pinion is out of the way. Has anyone done this?
Here's the recommended procedure from WIS

I never worked on the front diff other than replacing the fluid. I'll have to look again but i dont think it will even fit out the bottom.
From reading the instructions posted above and then reading thru the instructions to remove the axle carrier AR33.10-P-0001CW it appears the axle carrier has to be lowered out of the way to unbolt the diff from the engine.
Ive looked at all the parts diagrams and looked thru any photos i happen to have under mine.
The subframe above appears to be the RWD. Heres the 4matic: Top of photo is front of the car.

Thanks! I think you're right about the axle carrier illustration--WIS shows a rear wheel drive car. Basically, WIS says to remove it to access front differential but I was hoping there was a mechanics shortcut to avoid that.
Has anyone done this? Is it a reasonable job to do in a driveway with jackstands?
