2025 CLE AMG 53
Dealership tracker location

I just came across a tracking box in my new X5 that was hidden in the back right corner of the hatch. It was behind an access door I was thinking about storing a few things in. It was magnetic and just stuck to the metal structure. I looked up the info on the sticker and it said it is an "asset tracker" with a cellular modem and 7 year battery. I assume they are either selling my location habits or it is a way to find the car if there is a loan default.

I started thinking about my 2025 CLE AMG 53 and wondering if it has a similar easy to get to place the dealer may have stuck something similar. Any suggestions where to look? I poked around in the trunk and didn't see any obvious places to check

Thanks

Might be your specific dealership doing that tracking stuff on that bmw. I haven't heard of similar reports on other MB owners' MB or any MB owners' bmws as well here.

That said. If you are talking about telematics, then every brand has that now. Not just the Germans.

Until you have the title, it's not really your car. So...

Auto finance companies can legally place GPS trackers in a car, but it has to be disclosed. Hidden trackers w/o disclosure are highly illegal. Read your BMW finance agreement again. If it wasn't disclosed and you don't remember giving consent, then you can take legal action. But as said, they have the right to do this. It's not your car until you have fully paid it off.

As for your Mercedes, if you didn't know this, it has built-in GPS tracking. Mercedes can locate your car. They for example do that as part of the Stolen Vehicle Service that's part of the Mercedes me offerings. If your car gets stolen, law enforcement can work with Mercedes to locate it. Pretty sure your finance company will do the same if you default on your loan.

Yes, all of my cars are new enough to have connectivity and tracking from the manufacturer. My Corvette was involved in the class action law suit where GM was selling identifiable location data and driving habits to Lexus/Nexus who then sold the personal data to insurance companies. I requested a copy of my data and it showed every trip the car had made, date, time, destination, and if there were any moderate or higher acceleration or braking events. I was just asking to see if there are any easy to get to spots they may have stuck an additional tracker in the Mercedes. The location in the X5 would have taken maybe 30 seconds for them to place it. I didn't see anywhere in the CLE that would have been so easy and I wanted to make sure I didn't miss anywhere obvious. I understand why a loan company may want a tracker, I do not want my personal driving habits, what stores I frequent, what restaurants I go to, etc possibly sold to third parties for marketing if I can avoid it. It is bad enough with what probably goes on with my cell phone. The tracker would have had to have been placed before they knew if I was getting a loan or not. The X5 was sitting inside, in front of the finance office I was in. I got in and drove it out of the showroom.

It is possible that that tracker was only there for inventory tracking and it was supposed to be removed during PDI. If you got in and drove off it sounds like you skipped PDI.

Not sure where they’d hide a tracker in a CLE or any Mercedes, but I do know that my dealership puts trackers in their loaner cars, and I would assume they remove them if somebody buys the loaner or at least they are supposed to remove it, but things are often forgotten during PDI. People have taken delivery of new cars that still had the shipping blocks in the suspension.

However, Mercedes doesn’t sell driving data to third-parties. It’s all in the privacy agreement and you can further opt out.

I would definitely call your BMW dealer and ask what the deal is with the tracker...
