SBC-Sensotronic Brake Control

Apparently it controls hydraulic control unit, hydraulic pump, pressure reservoir, brake operating unit, front and rear wheel speed sensors, brake lamp switch and yaw rate sensor (whatever that is).
How can you tell when it is going bad or failing? Please don't say take it to dealership. I use an independent and trust them and plan to have annual service in Oct./Nov.
I realize that warranty would only apply if took it to MB dealer.
How long should it take to replace the unit? Problem with dealership is that they are expensive and far away. Leaving car with them means someone has to drive over to pick me up and then take me back later.
Thank you.
This does bring up a good point. With DAS (pre-XENTRY), you can reset the counter and eliminate the DTC and warning light, but it does not fix the imminent failure. There are devices on eBay that will do the same. So, anyone buying one of the vehicles listed in that letter should have a dealer verify the number of actuations and that the SBC unit was replaced or that it is still “healthy”. The mileage on the car and the age can give you an idea of how the car was driven — city or highway commuting — and provide a general indication of the remaining life on the installed system.
I had a 2004 SL500 with SBC (and ABC) and it was an amazing vehicle until things started to wear out. My SBC was replaced under the extended warranty because it did fail even though I had accidentally reset the counter. Every year that goes by for a car with SBC is another year closer to its demise.
