Traffic Sign Assist? Can I Download It?

Hi Everyone,

My 24 e350 only has one camera on the windshield, not two. It does not have the driver assistance package. But, I see I can purchase the Traffic Sign Assist in my car MB App now, and was wondering how it would work if I don't have that second camera? Does anyone know before I spend the money?

THanks!

Traffic sign recognition doesn't need two cameras. Two cameras is so that the driving assistance system have stereo vision and can judge depth. Just like us, you don't need two eyes to read, but you need two eyes to see in 3D.

Not in my opinion. I rarely look at it. Depends on whether you find yourself often not knowing what the speed limit is, but in the US, the speed limits aren't as much of a mystery. I find it useful whenever I drive in Europe, because speed limits constantly change and are heavily enforced with speed cameras everywhere.

I get nervous if I do not see the blinking speed sign image on my dash. As long as it's blinking it means I'm still alive.

Depends on the cost. All it does is read speed limit signs and puts the speed limit in your HUD. I like having it there and I miss it when not driving my car but I could live without it.

I think permanent activation is two or 300.

That would not be worth it to me. Maybe $50 but even that is too much for just traffic sign assist. The whole of digital extras is not that much. It would be a hard pass for me at that price.

GPS provides a basic level of speed limit information; the camera system enhances this capability.

In Florida there are many default speed limits for certain locations that are not necessarily posted such as 15, 20, 25, 30, 55, 60, 70 and 80 mph. There is one town near me, Belleair, that has an unposted speed limit of 25 mph. If one crosses the city boundary on a non-arterial road, the unposted speed limit may change without notice. The police usually have a radar car there. Traffic fines constitute a significant portion of the city budget.

As to be inferred from the other posts, I guess it depends on where you live and how you drive. I don’t want it on my car because I can read the posted signs and don’t want something bugging me when I go over the limit.
In Texas, if you’re not going 15 or 20 mph over the speed limit you might get rear ended… I wouldn’t pay for it if it was $5 for permanent activation.

Also to add, the system isn't perfect. It doesn't always pick up the correct speed limit or misreads speed limit signs. One feature you get with the system in conjunction with DISTRONIC is that DISTRONIC can automatically adopt the current speed limit, but many have found that it could suddenly slow down the car from highway speeds to say 25 mph, because it misread a sign, so most of us have this turned off. So it really just becomes a gimmick of seeing the speed limit in the instrument cluster. I have mine set to flash if I'm going 5 mph if I remember correctly. Basically it flashes all the time...haha. I have it more for when I spot a patrol car on the side of the road to quickly adjust my speed. Ultimately, my radar detector is what keeps from getting speeding tickets, and not seeing the speed limit in the instrument cluster.

For me it only flashes when you first go over by the configured amount (1-5mph) and will flash again if you maintain your speed over the configured limit and it reads another sign. It doesn't flash constantly.

I have also noticed it is sometimes wrong and had it slow down on me when cruise control was configured to adapt the speed limit. That's when I disabled that feature for good.

Yes, I was exaggerating. It’s not flashing constantly, but rather repeatedly.

It's a nice gimmick...made nicer with the HUD so you don't have to look down to see it. but i certainly wouldn't miss it if it disappeared, and i certainly wouldn't pay for it as a separate subscription.

I have it on all of the time. I've never experienced it picking up the wrong speed limit. That being said I do not allow DISTRONIC to adapt to the speed limit. I find it very convenient to have the speed limit displayed on the HUD. It never flashes.

I like Lane Assist too. If I get on a lane line, it simply puts a small vibration into the steering wheel.

I’m glad we don’t have the mandatory crap like Europe does where the system has to yell at the driver as soon as the speed limit is exceeded by 1 kph/mph. I had my first rental car with this crap last year. It’s made worse by the fact that it has to be turned off every time the car is started. Lane assist is now mandatory, too. Every time I drove off I first had to fiddle with the touchscreen to turn off all the annoyances.

It won't be long from now that all US new cars will have driver monitoring systems with immobilizers to prevent you from driving drunk, drowsy, or under the influence. I wonder how many false positives that will produce and leave people unable to drive their car.
