M156 white smoke randomly at WOT

Hello everyone. Apologies for posting here, as the W212 E63 (M156) subforum seems dead. I was doing some spirited driving in my somewhat new to me 2011 E63 yesterday evening. It was about 85 degrees at this time. I had a friend who was following close behind me in his Nismo Z.

A truck cut both of us off, and as I went to overtake, I saw my oil temp go up to 240 degrees Fahrenheit. Didn’t think too much of it as it hit 240 a few days ago when driving, as the weather has been hot recently, so I stayed WOT. As I was finishing my pass and was beginning a lane change, I looked in my side view mirror and saw a bunch of white smoke coming out the back of my exhaust. My buddy’s Z will smoke occasionally as his car runs lean at the moment due to a crappy tune, so I thought it was his car until he called and told me it was coming out the back of mine. I immediately pulled over and my car was not smoking anymore. Popped the hood and the engine sounded fine. We were only another 10 minutes and 5 miles from our destination, so I pulled back out onto the highway and seemed to have all of my power. I had my eyes glued on the side mirror the entire time and no more smoke, and did a few half throttle pulls after taking the next exit and nothing.

Got to our destination, waited about 20 minutes and then checked the oil. Oil is still completely full and looked nice and clean, as I had my car serviced at the dealer 3,000 miles ago and the dealer told me my engine was nice and healthy at the time, aside from the driver side valve cover starting to leak. Waited another 30 minutes and checked my coolant. Also completely full, and still looked like new coolant. Later that night, I babied the car the entire way home, about 25 miles. Still no weird noises.

Checked my fluids this morning and everything was nice and full. I did a cold start and the engine ran like normal and did not smoke AT ALL from the exhaust. What gives? Could this be an issue with my PCV? Engine still seems like it has full power, but I’m still too scared to try WOT until I have it looked at.

Its a turbo car....the smoke was in between shifts...yes? If it was a constant bellowing - time to check your pistons for scoring. If it was a burp (during a shift)....continue on (oh, and get your engine scoped for giggles - it is due).

White smoke generally means coolant getting into the combustion chamber due to a failing head gasket for example. How did you check the coolant level? Engine needs to be completely cold and then the overflow tank should be at the cold fill line. Waiting 30 minutes is not enough. Check it first thing in the morning and if it’s getting lower and lower then you have a coolant leak. A weak point in the cooling system is more likely to show itself under high engine loads such as WOT. So you may have to do a few more pulls to stress the engine and see if you start losing coolant.

I checked the coolant this morning with the engine completely cold and it was full. Also, after checking the oil after I got to my destination last night, I briefly started the engine and revved it up once. The exhaust smelled like fuel (as it should) and not coolant. Did not smoke again at this time either.
