Did my mechanic put wrong trans fluid? AMG GTS
Desperately looking for some advice from AMG GTS experts here.
A few weeks ago my 2018 AMG GTS threw a Transmission Oil Overheating warning and then went into Neutral while I was parking. I also got a red "Stop Vehicle - Transmission Malfunction" message.
I shut the car off, let it cool down, and everything went back to normal.
My mechanic inspected the transmission fluid for signs of internal damage by draining about 2 quarts and checking for metal shavings. He said the fluid looked clean with no significant metal present. He then added approximately 2 quarts of Pentosin FFL-4 back into the transmission.
About a week later, the overheating warning came back. This time the transmission temp reached 257°F. I slowed down, let it cool, and the warning disappeared again. Since then I've driven the car normally, including some heavy Sport+ driving, without immediately reproducing the issue.
Now I'm planning a transmission fluid flush, and going to the dealer for this, but I'm concerned about the fluid that was added during the inspection.
The mechanic used:
- Pentosin FFL-4 transmission fluid
- Motul Gear 300 75W-90 gear oil
My questions:
- Is draining 2 quarts to inspect for metal a normal diagnostic procedure and then adding 2 quarts back in?
- Would transmission damage typically show up in that amount of fluid?
- Most importantly, HAS HE DAMAGED the transaxle by using Pentosin FFL-4 and Motul Gear 300 75W-90 gear oil
Also if im posting in the wrong place let me know where is the correct thread. Long time lurker around here but rarely posted.

I used Motul 300 75W-90 as gear oil and have done a few track days. All good.
That said Pentosin FFL-4 seems to refernce MB part number 001 989 86 03, which is MB 236.25
