SL/R129: Can I put 99 and on style mirrors on a 96?

I think you probably can - I've just had a door replaced on my 96 after I had an altercation with my entrance gates. The whole door comes as a single entity - no outer skin to replace and it's highly unlikely Mercedes wanted to make sheet metal changes to support a cosmetic change like a mirror re-design. In fact, the new door has an extra side beam which the old door did not.
So I think you will be able to change the mirrors. It will not be cheap and it will not be easy because that door is *full* of stuff, especially if you have the door air bags. If you are doing the job yourself, be sure to disconnect the battery to avoid accidently setting off the air bag, that would really ruin your day.
Not sure if the mirrors will require painting, with some manufacturers they require painting. Even if they're body colored, you may have a color which was current for 96 but not for the last make-over.

So you think I'd have to replace the whole door as well? That would be expensive! Maybe you could answer another question for me. I'm looking to buy an SL soon. I definitely want the AMG body styling so I believe that is available from 96 on. What other changes have they made from 96 to 2002? I know they painted the door handles but are they any different or just painted? Thanks.

I think his point was that the 99 mirrors are compatible w/ 96 design and can be fitted on w/o changing the door. he's just stating some facts about the new doors from the old doors...
all u have to do is change the mirror assembly...no door changing needed
I think he new SL's have new front bumper, rear bumper and side skirts(?), headlight housings as well.
dun forget to get some clear corners for the front, and they also put side markers.

SL Clear Lenses
Hi There, well I do have the newer turn signal lenses, one of them is brand new never been put on the car (Bosch of course, Original Mercedes)... it's really easy to replace them too. If you intersted I will sell them to you and yes it will fit your 90 SL, these are the clear lenses with a bit of amber on the side, same as 96-02 and will fit from 1990 till 2002 models... Thanks...

These are not the total clear ones, these are the ones that are on the newer SL's 96+ from the dealer which sell 125.00 each. these have a bit amber on the side but clear on the front side of it. I'll let them go for $80.00 a pair. Any questions please don't hesitate to ask. Thanks...
