2003 SL500

gear shift removal 1999 Sl 500

Can anyone tell me how to get the gear shift knob and lever out so I can install the new burl wood one with lever that I just bought? Do I have to remove the entire console?

you bought the wrong shift knob........ the shift knob with the shaft it for 1990-1995 SL...... your is 1999...... to remove your knob is easy it only take a 1 minute...... all you have to do is twist the bottom piece between the plastic and leather of the shift knob..... it 2 piece..... twist the plastic one.... and you done..... good luck......

I believe there is a latch or bolt just underneath the knob. Turn that and the knob should come off. I heard people mentioned putting a dab of oil in the new knob makes installing it onto the shaft a lot easier. Hope this helps.
