SL600 Intermittent Start Problem Becomes Permanent

I have been experiencing an intermittent starter engagement problem that now seems to be permanent. Turn the ignition key to position 2 (ignition) and all lights, electronics, etc. power up, can even hear the throttle motors. Turn the ignition key to position 3 (engage starter) and no response. All electronics, etc. stay on, but no starter engagement. No click, tap, etc. of the starter solenoid engaging.

This problem had been intermittent until today. At first, the problem was rare but had been increasing in frequency. Before today, I could simply turn off the ignition, remove the key, and restart the engine. No problem. Today, even that does not work. Whatever was intermittent is now broke. So a troubleshooting I go.

Other than the ignition switch, neutral safety switch, and starter solenoid, what else should I be looking at? It's a '96 SL600 with ~115K. Any common or known problems relative to starter engagement under the above conditions? Any leads and thoughts, much appreciated.

Cheers,
Jeff
