Clarification on Issues with R129 SL Transmission?

Hi, Really interested in purchasing a '97-'02 SL500. I understand the soft top cylinder rebuilding requirement. However I read that the earlier 5 speed auto transmissions used a brass bushing that breaks down - later transmissions ('01 or '02?) had an improved, strengthened part. Is this at all accurate? Model year cutover on the better transmission?

Lastly, is there also an improved seal so that fluids are not wicked into the transmission case through an electrical connection? Thanks.

It has been reported that MY1999 and later transmissions are more robust.

I do not know about the seal, and I have never experienced any effects from oil wicking-up through the wiring harness.

Thanks for the info - so I'll focus on a '99-'02.

one more question - any issue of the rear main seal leaking with frequency on the SL500?

Thanks again.
