Roll Bar doesn’t lower itself fully

I have a 1996 R129, the convertible top works pretty well, however the rollbar wont go down fully. The rollbar gets almost to the down position then stops. To get the rollbar to lock into place I have to push down on it. If I don’t push down on it, the rollbar will creep back up while I am driving and make some noise while it does.

I bought the car like this and I would like to try and troubleshoot the problem myself. Is there anything I should take a look at first? I am a total newbie to this. I have been trying to find someone with my problem but I can seem to find anyone.

Evidently the hydraulically-operated pawls which lock the roll bar into place have failed. For a solution look on eBay for a used roll bar.

What exactly is a pawl and why do you recommend getting a used rollbar?

I had supposed that on eBay the roll bar was generally sold complete with the bar and left/right supports. The opposite is true. Search "R129 Roll Bar" gives countless listings, and this one looks pretty good: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1999-Mercedes-SL500-R129-Roll-Bar-Hydraulic-Actuator-LH-RH-1298600435-1298600335/292372139570?epid=1517791388&hash=item4412bcce32:g :mK0AAOSwQcJaNBww&vxp=mtr.

Pawl: https://www.google.com/search?q=pawl&num=50&rlz=1C1CHFX_enUS712US712&sour ce=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjW5qqOyu7ZAhUKoFM KHZSbCYQQ_AUICigB&biw=819&bih=524.
