1996 SL500 ME Control Unit

My 1996 SL500 would not pass smog (California) due to the "Non-Continuous Monitors not being supported, this was at a smog station. The car runs fine & the emissions are very low. I then had the dealership take a look at the car.......#1 ME Control Unit is faulty....Est. $2400 #2 Air injection ports plugged...Est. $4250 Can anyone tell me what a "ME Control Unit" is? The dealer sure can't describe it. Any help would be appreciated.

ME Control Units

Check Ebay Motors. I think I saw someone selling some electronic modules, cheap, for the 1996 model year.

The ME Control Unit is the main computer for the engine, and also one of the most expensive control units on the car. "ME" stands for Motor Electronics. I've never heard of a failure of the control unit where the monitors won't run, that sounds very strange. You may want to try another dealership first to get a second opinion.
