SL/R129: Key FOB for 2002 SL600

Key FOB for 2002 SL600
I've been told that key FOBs for my 2002 sl600 are no longer available. I have only one and am wondering if these FOBs are truly unavailable what happens if someone looses their only FOB? Is there a source for another?

I wish that it were true that the parts clerk at MB of Seattle were indeed "brain dead" but this does not appear to be the case: This morning I called MB of San Diego and asked the helpful parts clerk there for a FOB for my car, after some checking he got back to tell me that they were NO LONGER AVAILABLE! He also suggested that I call MB of North America and lodge my complaint (which is what they do with all R129 customers who request such a FOB).

Waaaaw, commmmmmon..!?!,,
my friend got 2001 Sl600,
he went to the local dealer around "5" months & gave them his VIN #, they ordered (2) FOB keys from Frankfurt/Germany,,
he got a new keys & everything Okey,,

You CAN NOT get keys from Mercedes for 1997-2002 r129 models (and a couple others).
I'll post the article later!

It is a north America problem. Keys are available in some countries but would not work on our north America cars.

There are "some" locksmiths around the country that can read the DAS and program a flat chipped key for about $350-500+. There is one or two in RI, Cobra Locksmith in New York, a couple in California?
