SL/R129 91 300SL ignition lock stuck

1991 300SL, 2000 W208 convertible

91 300SL ignition lock stuck

Dear Sirs:
My 91 300SL is inoperable due to a stuck ignition lock.Locksmith says no can do on site and my mechanic wont mess with it.
Any suggestions beyond using the dealership would be greatly appreciated.
I am not a man of unlimited means.

I think the dealer would be your safest route in this regard.

The dealer may charge you more than the value of the car, so your only practical recourse may be to do the job yourself.

I presume your problem is that you insert the ignition key and it will not turn. I suppose its possible the key is worn and a new key is the solution, but I think it's more likely that the lock cylinders are worn. If that is the case, then you need to destroy it by drilling it out. Then you can use a screwdriver or other implement to turn the ignition one "click" over to "Position I" (see owner's manual) and remove the ignition switch assembly for replacement.
