Without seeing any warning lights ... I have experienced improved performance when the following things were replaced:
- air mass sensor
- fuel filter
- spark plugs
I have also exerienced dramatic loss of power when the car's control system starts to restrict the power output of the car when the following warning lights came on:
- BAS/ESP ... was fixed by repacing the "Brake Lamp Switch" one time and replacing the "Brake Diaphram Travel Sensor" the second.
- Check Engine ... was fixed by replacing the "LHS after CAT O2 Sensor"
But I am no mechanic. Your problem could be from many different areas.
Are there no warning lights displayed? Why not take it to a MB dealer for some diagnostic investigation?

Regarding loss of power ... under another thread (serious maintenance issues, started by blueSL) regarding his R129 morebhp reported:
" ... horrible missfire between 6 and 15 miles. Outside these ranges she runs fine.
To date this month -
1) Investigate the cause - they state air mass sensor, regeneration valve and distributor caps to start with! $750 just to investigate.
2) Fit air mass sensor and regeneration valve - $1200
Still running so poor at the 6 - 15 mile stage that it has not got the power to climb hills!
3) Yesterday fit one new distributer cap $190
Will try again at the weekend to see if we have solved the problem. Too stressful driving in heavy traffic when it is running this bad.
If not in for the second cap replacement (they only had one instock!),"
The next thread by morebhp said that the second ditributor cap did fix the problem.
Let us know what you find to have been wrong with your car.

27000 miles is nothing, and the car may be in limp-home mode where the revs are limited to 4000 rpm, the gearbox stays in 2nd and the engine is prone to overheating because of the high revs/low speed prolonged use of 2nd gear implies.
But like a child with a temperature, the car is telling you something. Take it into the dealer and get it checked. With cars as complex as the R129, it is vital you stick to the proper maintenance schedule or, if you have ASSYST, take the car in when it tells you do. Mother Mercedes knows best.
