SL/R129: Speedometer works but is erratic

1994 SL500
Speedometer works but is erratic
‘94 SL 500. Speedometer mph needle swings wildly and remains above 0 for several seconds when stopped. Even registers when moving in reverse.
is the front right speed sensor feeding the speedometer or is it the differential sensors? Or???
Car is a 10/93 build with ABS & ASR. Those lights are not lit and roof functions normally.
Pulled the cluster and visual inspection found zero corrosion on pins etc. cleaned with contact cleaner and reinstalled. pulled all fuses and cleaned contacts. (Note - some fuses appear to be quite old possibly original but not blown). No change
I’ve read lots of threads but all deal with non functioning speedometer combined with ABS ASR soft top issues.
anybody else have this particular symptom?
