It's toned down. The turbos feed off the exhaust gases which is why the exhaust sounds so much more muffled.
I suggest you hear them versus each other in person at the dealer ship. Both are quiet (enough) at idle, but the SL55 has a lot more character at WOT.

My CL600 is MUCH quieter than the S55 I had. In fact, when I first bought it, the car was already running in a parking lot and I was walking around it inspecting it. When I got in I nearly tried started it until I noticed the rpm's. 
Even when floored you barely hear a thing. I actually wish it was a bit louder like the S55. That car sounded mean!
