I guess you can only go so far with the SL design, the current is probably as close the best mercedes looks ever, timeless look ,simplicity yet expensive looking.... emphasizing function over form as a throwback to the mercedes design direction of yesteryears. , Buy onenow before they start attempting to imitate bmw and throw on weird wheel wells, bangle-like butts in the next design!

Just a chop of a pic of the current SL, not the real deal. Infact, according to a good spy site I go to, the new SL test mule is still under construction meaning the current SL does have a few years left and will most likely come out in EU before the states as usual. This makes sense since they usally dont waste their time on a full bumper/grill/taillight/engine refresh in order to sell it for one year only.

Care to share what good spy site you know of?

according to the spy site, the next one will have cls - style head lamps and will come out in 2010-2011 ( us arrival)
if they retain the same grill and four eye set up of the E's 07 model for the SL refresh, that SL would kick ass.

design is totally subjective. To me the best looking SL is the 107 chassis definitley not the 230

Agreed about design being subjective. In my opinion, I think the best looking current Mercedes model is the R230 SL. While all the models are beautiful(except the R-class :nix: ), to me it is the only one that looks perfect from every angle. I love the roof line at night especially when you are driving beside one and there are those beautiful thin LED taillights. The C215 is a close runner up for my favorite modern Mercedes design, except I never liked the view from the front. I always thought that the headlamps were too small and the nose of the car too narrow looking. Oh and if we're talking sedans, post 2003 facelift W220 is my favorite, in black.

Incidentally, that is a minority opinion. The 230, 129, and 113 are all widely regarded as better looking than the 107.
