SL-Class (R230) 2003 -- 2012: Discussion on the SL500, SL550, SL600

MOST People Buy An SL55 AMG Because They Appreciate It More Than Other SL Models.
The Same Goes For SOME People With The SL550.
Then There Are Some People Who Have A Certain Budget And Some Who Are Just Clueless Of The Different SL Models.

Oh, What Am I Saying?
You Can Have The Z06, I Have An SL55 AMG!
Any Z06? A stock Z06 tested by Car & Driver yields 1/4mi 11.7 @125.0mph. A quick search at dragtimes.com netted a 2002 Z06 with a 1/4mi 8.495@156.28mph. The best time posted by a modded SL55 is 11.86@119.34mph. For full disclosure, the best stock SL550 time is 13.4@104.0mph.

Why would you buy a SL55 when you could get a SL63, or SL63? Why would you get a SL63 when you can buy a SLR? Why SLR when you can get a SLR 722? Why SLR 722 when you can get a SLR722 Roadster?

Is it because we can't afford it or we had better things to do with our money? Oh wait, in a sense that would mean I couldn't afford the extra $$$.

Seriously though, people drag race the Mercedes SL? Good grief~

If a fast time is posted on dragtimes.com it only means that it's the fastest time posted on dragtimes.com.

Yeah, that dirty lying cheating Z06 owner had the nerve to show video proof of one of his sub-nine second runs. Can one of our local SL55 guys SHOW us that their car is faster?

The Vette starts out with same power from a NA engine and weighs a thousand pound less than our SL's. Slap on a turbo or SC and all of the tweaks that draggers do and there's power to weight ratio that's hard to beat.

I do. A fully prepped track is about the safest place on earth to run the car flat out. Running the car flat out is always a lot of fun. On top of that I usually get to see some other incredible cars and meet neat people.

For a $20 test-and-tune fee plus a few gallons of gas, it's great entertainment for a few hours on a sunny afternoon.

Just the look on the other driver's face in their SL500 is priceless as he/she gets a glimpse at my side and rear badge and not to mention the big brakes and quad exhaust pipes.

I Never said The Z06 Owner is a Dirty Lying Cheat or That His Time Wasn't True.

Anyway, I Seen an SL55 Run A Faster Time Than 11.86@119.34mph which is Currently Posted as the Fasted Time on Dragtimes.com, But He Will Never Post It.
I Will Soon Have a Lot More Power Than He Has and I Will Never Post My Time Either.

2011 350 4Matic EClass Sport Edition and 2003 500SL & 2010 Range Rover Sport
This is an interesting thread. I own a $15,000,000 business and I still love my 2003 SL500 that I bought 2 months ago with 7800 miles on the odometer for $53,000. I have a 5 year extended warranty with 0 down deductible that I bought from the Dealer for $1600.00, and today I invested about $60,000 with my broker in some Bank stocks which, I am optimistically predicting with produce a great return.
Cars are my passion....and I usually buy new, but the SL is kind of timeless, and I'm certainly not interested in racing it against a "Lambo" or even a Chevy!
The Benz (and I've owned 6 of them) is a car that is refined and should, in my humble opinion, be driven that way.
I defy anyone to tell me what year my SL is. Almost everyone who sees it thinks it's brand new.

Stan

Stan they are hard to tell apart by model year, even for an owner. Enjoy

I guess I misinterpreted your dragtimes.com comment. Sorry for reading something into your comment.

Since your proof is unavailable at this time, are you willing to make the claim that your's or your friend's SL55 will run mid-8 secs and beat this Z06? How about after your mods? Of course there is no proof that this is the fastest Z06 either.

Tuner vs. tuner, Lingenfelter's Z06 at 1000hp vs. VRP's SL65 at 1000hp, who wins? I know it's not an unbelievably fast SL55, but the SL65 is closer match to the Z06 when both are stock.

After My Modds I'll Take On Any Stock or Mildly Modded Z06

Havoc, I'm somewhat familiar with the #1 SL55 on Dragtimes (BMS' car) and very familiar with the #2 SL55 (mine). Neither car is modded to the max so it's absolutely the case that SL55s can be modded to run even faster.

I didn't post my time to brag but, rather, to share the information with the modding community. As in, XXX mods produce YYYY results. I know other folks who won't post on Dragtimes for privacy reasons. Although I don't share their concerns, I understand and respect their motivation.

But back to information sharing...this other SL55, I'd love to hear what mods he has and what time(s) he ran.

Wow, there are a lot of opinions. I bought an SL500 that has the AMG sport package including the rear lights and bumper, the wheels are also AMG, I even have duel tips. The car looks like an SL55, but it is badged SL500. I bought the car because I like the SL and the deal was decent. I buy used, it makes economical sense. I may, in the future get an AMG 55 or 65, but not new.

Just took a closer look at these comments. Way off topic
I started a thread dealing with 1/4 mile runs. Lets bring these comments to that thread. I drag raced my SL and am interested in what other SL500's will do in the quarter mile.

He Has an '03 SL55 AMG With A Kleemann K4 Kit And A Shot Of Nitro.
He Ran an 11.57, Which I Believe He Could Improve On With A Better Tune and More Practice. Unfortunately, He Is Happy With What He Has And Doesn't Want To Put Any More Money Into It.

Your posts are hard to read. Try capitalizing only the first word of each sentence and proper nouns:

Ah, that's better.

Depends on the day...
so... I know this thread is pretty old, but has anyone ever supercharged a SL550? I just bought a 2008 SL550, which has a bucnh of power, but I'm always looking for more. Just thought it might be an easy fix by adding a SC. Thanks in advance...

Yep, that'll work. It's a fairly expensive bit of equipment and unless you've got a well equipped home garage you'll wind up paying a bit for installation. It might be worth comparing that cost to what it would take to sell your SL550 and buy an SL600 or SL55.

2011 SL550
SL550 is naturally aspirated vs supercharger, roomier, rides better, is plenty quick enough. If you truly desire speed buy a hyabusa or an R1, blow by any car, .......any. If speed was the main reason to punches a car we'd all be driving dragsters. I can deal with the ABC and other issues on the 550, not certain on a supercharged car though.

Yeah, not so much. Bikes are good for cheap and fast but cars can be made much quicker and faster than bikes.

NO LONGER ACTIVE
I didn't buy an SL55 because I wanted a MY2009+ and that would have been an SL63. I did not want an SL63 prior to MY2011 because I did not want the concerns over the bad lifters and head bolts of those M156 engines. I considered an SL65, but those are just too hard to find. I was more concerned with finding one that was in good condition, low miles and well-maintained.
