305/30/20 rear tire, will it work?

im about to get some 20 inch wheels. the rear being 20x11. the suggested size tire is 305/25/20 but i would like some more sidewall for wheel protection.

will 305/30/20 work? will it rub? has anybody tried this yet?

CY 03-14-2008 11:19 PM

Pretty darn sure it will rub.

gqa 03-14-2008 11:23 PM

thanks CY, how have your 20s worked out for you in la? are your roads as bad as nyc?

fred900 03-15-2008 01:24 AM

As far as I know, the next size up from the 305/25-20's are the 305/35/20. It's a lot of work unbending those rims. I have Forgiatos Concavo 20x11 with 305/25-20. I was thinking about getting Bridgestone Potenza RE050A Pole Position but the biggest they come in is 275/30-20. They are telling me that they will fit. Please post back what works. I am going to need new tires soon.

I havent had any issues yet, but I do check the tire pressure once a week and keep them all over 40 psi. Also Ive noticed my Lowenharts/Continental setup have perfect wear patterns while the cheaper wheels with a slightly non-perfect offset didnt wear as well- but I also have been driving a lot with the suspension raised lately instead of lowered, so that could have made a difference. Any good custom shop would know if that tire fitment would work, but my money is on it rubbbing.

I would say the roads arent as bad as NYC where I live, but in some areas of LA its pretty close.

toyo makes 305/30/20 in their Proxes line

i know im making a trade off with looks and a smooth ride but im just trying to see what possibilities might work. check with your shop and see what they say about the toyo's

CY, what if i adjust my cars height about the same difference as the sidewall height difference? i have lowering links. think it still will rub?

Keng1 03-17-2008 10:51 AM

I have 305s is the rear too and dont have any problems. Wont the 305/30 result in an inaccurate reading of the mileage on the car?

gqa 03-17-2008 03:40 PM

hey whats up Keng, it probably will now that you mentioned it. thanks for your input.

these damn NYC streets make me nervous!

Well its possible that it would not rub but I would much rather run a 305/25 lowered then a 305/30 not lowered. Toyo T1r's are great by the way. Only problem is their sidewall looks worn SO fast and they pick up nails like no other tire Ive ever owned. I had Proxie 4's on an Escalade back in the day and also had sidewalls issues.

on the 305/25/20... i have used Conits, Pirelli and Yokohamas..... im eh' on all of them..

275/30/20 is a size tire rack reccomends on the rear... theres Pirelli, Yoko's, Bridgestones, Hankooks, Sumi's, Kuhmos, Michelins... Out of all of these the michelins have been the "toughest" out of all of them (in my experiences)....

Quick question for those that may know. My car is sitting on 305/25/20 Toyo Proxes T1R's in the rear and 245/30/20 Toyo Proxes 4's in the front. Does anyone know the general life of these tires.

Just had one of my rears blow out on the freeway yesterday (Live in LA) and I only have around 12-15K miles on 'em. The inside of the tire still had a decent amount of tread on them but it looked more like the tire just ripped off in pieces.

Any knowledge you guys could provide would be great as I'm thinking about maybe just getting cheaper tires if the tire life is gonna be this short.

Also had them and the rear lasted no more than 15k miles.

I am going to run 295/30/20, on a 10", currently on 285/30/20 and seems there is enough space, anyone try this size? My car is lowered but not super slammed

Benz5656 01-25-2011 05:03 PM

You know I had my tire guy look at my wheel and tire package, and he doesn't suggest I put a 295/30/20 or a 305/25/20 tires. I am running a 20X11in rear, with a 4.85 lip. So I am assuming because the lip is so deep and the rim offest, I can't go wider than a 285/35/20.

There is no way for 285/35-20 tire - that is 27.85" diameter - to fit SL.

Benz5656 01-26-2011 11:18 AM

Im sorry it was a typo I meant 285/30/20

I cannot comment on the 20x11 width, but I have run a 295/30/20 without any issue. Toyo T4 Proxies as well (but haven't been pleased with the tread life).
