Flaps on Trunk Lid - Convertible Top Operation

I have an 03 SL500 and sometimes, when closing the roof, the flaps that are folded up under the trunk lid drop a bit and stops the tops operation. They fold out when the top is down and no issues.

Seems like the only time it ever happens is when I am on a date or pulling up in the valet line at a busy restaraunt. Wonder if she is getting jealous. :)

Is there something I need to tighten to keep this from happening? Read through the threads and didn't see another post like this. Trust I'm not the only one.

I have the same problem. It happens when I have the roof down, then open the trunk.

After closing the trunk, it appears that the edge of the trunk lid catches onto the flap.

As the roof is closed, it flips the trunk lid open but catches onto the flap. This stops the roof from completing the close cycle.

I usually have to either pry the trunk lid from catching on to the flap. Or, I have to stop the roof close cycle, then have it do the roof open cycle. As part of the roof open cycle, it puts the trunk lid back in the proper position and does not catch the flap.

Any suggestions from others who may have fixed this? I am sure it is some sort of adjustment or alignment of the flap mechanism.

I have had the same problem. Mercedes Benz of Sacramento Service Dept. fixed this for me under warranty. I was told that there was a service bulletin out on this and that the dealer has this information. Mine were fixed and, so far, the problem has not reoccurred.

For me the problem occurred when I was attempting to put the top up or down. When the trunk lid would raise to vertical, the right flap would not close completely. I had to get out of the car, and manually push the flap to flat. This was not difficult, but a hassle.

Check with the service dept. for the bulletin.

thank you.

Yes please post a link to tis adjustment, i had to have this fixed under warranty as well, it is a common problem and you will note at times a flap can get hung up if not adjusted right and can get damaged and then they have to replace it, it is expensive as i just went thru this

Rook3300 02-20-2009 01:01 PM

Yes, please post the adjustment instructions. I've not had this problem yet, but I would like to fix it myself if it does ever happen. Thanks.

Yes, IF your car is still under warranty. If not, good luck getting them to fix a top malfunction (or very much else) for free.

mikesSL55fla 11-24-2009 01:45 PM

there is a flap conversation kit that fixes this problem. Just had mine done under warranty.

Can you post the part number for the kit that is on your receipt for us? Thanks.

I'm glad I found this thread. I'm having the same problem. If there's a conversion kit, I sure could use some of it. Can you please forward to me as well>? I'm at stancchia@yahoo.com.sg. Thanks.
Has anyone else tried the fix on the PDF provided? I'm going to try it too.

Much appreciated. Oh, and Happy New Year to one and All!!

If there is in fact a service bulletin out on this issue, it would be great to get the bulletin number.

209MAD 01-01-2010 10:27 AM

If it was working fine before, and nobody went in there and tinkered with it, why would it be out and needed adjustment in the first place?

mikeblah 01-04-2010 01:55 PM

ya, one of my flaps has been sloppy lately. keeping the top from opening or closing here and there.

it seems loose as though a gear in a motor that moves it was stripped out, but i'll give this a try and hope that it is just an adjustment issue.

thanks for the post.

thanks for the post.

Just a word of caution, it's not that easy as some of the description above. At least not for me: Because there's only one adjustment nut per flap, When the flap is out (roof opening), and you adjust it so it's tight, this will also affect how much the flap goes in (roof closing), which may affect the closing sequence, causing the roof to stop. I suppose you could try it, but my car demands to be taken to the workshop.

fuzzball8 09-14-2010 07:17 PM

My passenger side flap went from loose to totally free hanging. Visit workshop is the dash warning message still, and top not working. Dealer tried adjustment once before to not much effect, now quoting $1,000 to replace "a stretched cable". I did not let them do it yet. Hoping for more suggestions!

2003 SL with saggy flaps

Did anyone find the Part number for the kit to rebuild the flap assembly. I see that there is just a gear. Please email to prace@componentcontrol.com. thanks

jrgator 10-21-2010 08:48 AM

I believe the part # is 230-750-01-11

traumadoc 10-21-2010 03:34 PM

Mine was fixed under CPO warranty. The timing was horrible like during a NC thunderstorm. Overpasses are our friends. :)
