Where can i get this done? how much will it cost?

Rick SL55 05-23-2009 11:40 PM

Any local muffler shop can do the work.

SPIKES 05-24-2009 09:17 AM

on a 2005 sl 500 is there any sensors on the cat?

do you cut it out including the piece where the 2 pipes are "crunched" together just behind the cat?
(see pic in post 11 in the following link.)

thanks:)

j_belll 05-24-2009 01:59 PM

should be around $100

Thanks for the replies

Delete just mufflers, you'll get super sound!

SoCalC55 05-24-2009 05:31 PM

It should cost right at $100

Any local muffler shop should and will be able to do it

There are only sensors in the primary cats, so you will not have to worry about throwing any codes

Here's what my C55 looks like with the resonator and secondary cats deleted(not the best picture but you can see the 3 new pipes:

oofreakoo 05-27-2009 03:45 PM

I had it done by my local guy for $40! One shop before him wouldnt even do it because of Cali law etc etc etc....My car sounds INCREDIBLE with this mod done and fab designs mufflers.

if you look at the pic in the link in my post #3 above could you tell me if they cut out the part where the 2 pipes are "squashed" together?:)

oofreakoo 05-27-2009 04:46 PM

Yeah, your pic is pretty close to the exact same spot give or take a couple of inches.

oofreakoo 08-11-2009 10:52 PM

UPDATE:

I just had my car smogged successfully without the secondary's. Just a heads up for all of you looking for some good cheap sound but were unsure of the smog laws.

$400!!??

Hey fellas~

So I went to this indipendant MB shop that does a fair amount of aftermarket stuff on MB's to get an estimate for the Cat deletes, and the guy told me it would take himn about 5 hours to drop the exhaust cut em out and properly weld the straight stainless pipes in place. It came out to be over $400!! He said I could do it for cheaper if they use exhaust clamps... How did you guys comne up with that amazing price of just about 100 bucks? did the drop the whole exhaust system?

Rick SL55 08-19-2009 10:10 PM

my local shop just cut/remove the cat with the torch and then solder a piece of stainless steel tube.

oofreakoo 08-20-2009 08:09 PM

Ummmm, I said "$40" not $100....LOL. I would check the same shops that do Hondas if you want to save more money. Anybody specializing in MB is going to bend you over. For the record, for anything else I would never recommend going to a non specialist but in this case, everybody does it the EXACT same way!

Hello,

The high flow secondaries work really well with our direct bolt on R230 SL500/SL55 Performance Headers. It you want to go the more conservative route and still pickup alot of power, go with the 300-cell metal core cats. They are 49 state legal and will give you more power & flow without changing the cars emissions or sound too much (for those that are more environmentally conscious). Its $180 shipped for the pair. 2.5" is proper diameter.

I had mine done yesterday at the muffler shop for 130.00. He cut out the two rear cats and added two pipes in. I don't know if it would make a difference, but the two pipes that they welded was a little smaller than the rest of the exhaust.

george4482 09-01-2009 12:45 PM

Pvlexxxus,

was it worth it? Do you notice any difference in sound or performance? I can't find anyone here in the Baltimore region to do it for less than 250!
I'm debating whether it's worth it... Let me know if you notice any difference.
Thanks

AMS Performance 09-01-2009 03:35 PM

Hello Pvlexxus,

It takes roughly 1-2 weeks for the exhaust & ECU to adapt so reserve judgment for a few weeks. The exhaust will gain more sound over time.

pvlexxus 09-01-2009 04:51 PM

It was worth it for me. It's cheaper than having new cat converters installed. So far it does sound a little deeper. That's the only difference that I notice. Hopefully after a few weeks I will notice more. I noticed that on Mr. Specials photo, his was the same size pipe as his exhaust. Mine wasn't the same size, it was smaller.

AMS Performance 09-01-2009 06:22 PM

2.5" is the proper size, you may have gotten the 2.25". Give it a little bit more time to break in and you will hear the deeper exhaust note.

Thanks AMS

i have been on the fence for this mod.
PLEASE let us know what it sounds like after a couple weeks:)

pvlexxus 09-04-2009 11:01 PM

I was out earlier tonight with my friend, we both have sl500s but he has the cat converter to where I have the two rear cats replaced with pipes. I noticed a difference in performance. My car pulled alot quicker than him every time we started to race. He now wants to do the same on his car. He wants to do the same mod also now because he loves the sound. Best 130, I've ever spent.
